Everyone is detachable

The gemstone had been on the sidewalk of Warren Street - how it got there is outside our purview - and now it's in the pocket of a young man named David. He was fiddling with the stone on his desk, waiting for the end of class, while surreptitiously trying to view a story much like this one.
As he read, unbeknownst to him, the stone began to glow. It was scanning him, scanning his thoughts, his dreams, his desires. Within the span of an hour, it had gone from dark and deep-purple to a white glow, and was about to-
The stone vanished, but its effects were still there. A change took place all across the world. The basic part of the change was that all humans were now able to detach and reattach parts of their bodies.
But one element still remains in doubt - who knows about the transformation?
