Chapter #5The Boondocks by: Unknown You seriously don't want to be in the boondocks with a bunch of monster yokels, but perhaps this could be your chance to get so far away from Under Gloom, Destiny would never follow. "You know what," you say. "I think I'll go on ahead and take the second option. Maybe I can pay my debt to society by catching Specter was it?" Destiny nods her head and unlocks your cell before she grabs you.
"If that's the case, you'll be staying with my sister and don't you make any trouble for her, her husband or my niece or you're gonna get it." You groan. Terrific, your one chance to get out of Under Gloom and you have to stay with Destiny's relatives. This sucked, but at least there was a chance you could escape. A few hours later, Destiny has locked you up in a cave with your arms crossed as you pout. She is speaking to Belladonna, the vice warden manticore. "I won't be back until tomorrow Belladonna," says Destiny. "So I need you to temporarily be in charge of things until I come back from visiting my sister. I don't want to hear about any problems while I'm away."
Belladonna lets out a snicker and salutes Destiny. "Don't worry Warden," she says. "Nothing will go wrong." Destiny just gestures to her second in command that she is watching her and then flies off, carrying you in the cage. There's a strange collar that Destiny put around your neck. "Hey Demona," you complain. "What's with the collar? And why don't we take a car?" Destiny's eyes light up. "Call me Demona one more time and I'll drop you. As for your question, I don't own a car. What would a flying monster need with one?" You knew this was going to be a long trip.
Soon, the two of you are flying over a small town with homey looking buildings in contrast to the skyscrapers of Fearfield. There is a sign that reads "Welcome to Dreadberry" and the skies above are unusually sunny and unclouded for being an area in a monster world. Destiny flies to the ground and holds her wings into a makeshift cape as she walks down the street carrying you. She eventually comes up to a pinkish colored two floor house and walks up to the door. Destiny knocks on the door and you look up to see somebody opening it.
This gargoyle girl was slightly shorter than Destiny with smaller horns, albeit curved downwards and with tan skin and long blonde hair. Her wings were a pinkish color and she was wearing a shirt shirt and blue skirt with an apron. You take it that was Fortuna given how she smiled at the sight of Destiny. "Destiny!" yells the other gargoyle as she hugs Destiny to the blue gargoyle's discomfort. "What's shaking big sister?" Destiny shoves her sister off before walking in. "Hello Fortuna," she says. "I can't stay long, this is a work related visit."
Fortuna shakes her head. "You're no fun Sis. It's all work and no play. Relax once in a while." Destiny lets out a scoff. "With my job, every second counts. I already regret leaving that backstabbing arachnid Belladonna in charge. By the way, Fortuna, I need to ask you a favor." "Shoot." Destiny holds you up in your cage and Fortuna looks in confusion. "Take a picture horn head," you say rudely. "It'll last longer." "You must be that Wade character my big sis is always complaining about," says Fortuna with a chuckle. "I can't believe this is the guy who causes you so much grief Destiny. He looks harmless."
Destiny pounds on the wall to get her sister's attention. "Don't be a fool Fortuna," she says. "This, this Wade has been driving me crazy since he came to Under Gloom. I'm ready to pull my hair out and floss with it because of this rule breaking little creep. But the punk says he's learned his lesson. Since I highly doubt it, I've taken him here to help your sheriff catch Specter." Destiny hands Fortuna your cage and Fortuna looks dumbfounded. "Destiny, even Maggie hasn't been able to catch Specter. And you're trusting a human to do it?"
Destiny takes out what looks like a remote control with only one button and gives it to Fortuna. "Trust him? Yeah right, I'm giving him thirty days to catch Specter before I haul his carcass back to Under Gloom. If he gives you any trouble, press that button, it will give the malcontent a nasty shock." You couldn't believe it. Destiny put a shock collar on you. "This is an outrage!" you yell. "Talk about mistrust you big blue son of a..!" Destiny presses the button and you let out a scream as the collar sparks electricity and zaps you. You pant as Destiny nods her head.
"Don't get fresh Wade," she says. "You will behave for my relatives or I'll dismantle you." As Destiny is saying this, you move your lips to mouth her words, just to mock her. Fortuna notices this and holds her finger over the button to gesture to you to stop. "What's going on here Fortuna?" asks a male voice. Into the room walks a tall pitch black skinned male gargoyle with light rose colored hair. Destiny just rolls her eyes at the sight of him.
"Hello David." Says Destiny. "Destiny?" asks the male garg. "Hey, hey, how's my favorite sister-in-law doing." Destiny reluctantly shakes hands before David notices you. "Fortuna," he asks. "Dear, what exactly is going on?" Fortuna lets out a smile. "Oh nothing David," she says. "Destiny just brought one of her prisoners to help the sheriff with the specter case." David lets out a sigh. "Well, he better catch him, or her or whatever Specter is. The bank manager threatened to can me if I let that ghost get in one more time." You take it Destiny's brother-in-law was a guard at the bank. You almost laugh at how a relative of that blue nightmare was having trouble with specter just as Fortuna opens the cage to let you out.
"By the way," says Destiny. "Where's Pearl?" "In school," replies Fortuna. "Our daughter is still a teenager you know. How's Fate doing? I take it she's still single." Destiny nods her head. "And I plan to keep it that way." You let out a scoff. "Marriage is a scam," you say. "Take you for example Goliath, you get stuck with that big blue harpy as an in-lAAAA!!!!" Fortuna presses the remote again to zap you. "Geez," says David. "That human is not like Neil at all. Could stand to learn some manners." You flip off the male gargoyle before Fortuna glares at you and shakes the remote.
"Well, I'll leave him in your hands," says Destiny. "And I'm really sorry for the horror I've unleashed on you." "Up yours Demona." You say to Destiny as you flip her off. Destiny gets so mad that she almost pounds you into paste but David grabs her by the arm to stop her. Fortuna breaks into laughter. "Oh. That's what they've been calling you since they noticed the resemblance." Fortuna laughs but Destiny is unamused. "It's NOT funny!" she yells. "You gotta admit it's a little funny." Says Fortuna.
Destiny leaves in a rage and slams the door. "Good riddance." You say. "I'd behave myself better if I were you," says David. "You're not in Dreadberry even ten minutes and you've been nothing but rude and insulting. And I used to wonder what crawled up that woman's craw." You stick out your tongue as Fortuna picks you up and shakes her head. "I hope for your sake you don't act like this when we take you to meet Sheriff Reaver." "Another gargoyle?" you ask. "Nemean lion actually." Nemean Lion?! That woman clearly sent you here to get eaten.
Before you can complain, the door opens up and Fortuna turns her head. "Hi Pearl," she says. "How was school today?" You look forward but don't see anyone. That's when you look down to see Pearl, Destiny's niece and you were surprised. She was barely half the height of either of her parents, which surprised you greatly. She had to be 450ft tall which was unusual given that gargoyles were usually the biggest monsters there were. Destiny herself was the biggest monster you've ever seen. Pearl looked like a female version of her father with white hair that had pinkish tints.
"School was okay. We're starting a project tomorrow and Mrs. Keys is assigning us partners. I just hope I don't get stuck with Onyx again." Pearl looks up and notices you before Fortuna explains everything. "You just missed your Aunt Destiny. She's arranged fro one of her inmates to stay with us and help the sheriff with Specter." Pearl blinks slightly. "A human in a monster jail? I'm surprised he isn't bones." "And I'm surprised your species is smart enough to talk shrimp boat." You say.
Immediately Pearl lets out a growl and hovers in the air as she glares at you. "What was that?" she asks in a threatening tone. "You heard me you rabid midget. I've seen leprechauns bigger than you." Pearl is about to attack you when David grabs her by the tail. "Calm down Pearl," he says to his daughter. "Geez, that bugger is provocative." "Wade," says Fortuna in an annoyed tone. "Don't make fun of Pearl's height. The doctor said she had a growth defect and she's rather sensitive about it." "I can see," you say mockingly. "She's almost as fiery as that crone sister of yours." Fortuna shocks you again as you scream and Pearl manages to calm herself down.
"This is going to be a long month." The teenage gargoyle mutters.
