The moment Tommy pressed the big red button, he forgot the hassle caused by his best friend. Tommy knew, in a few seconds from now, Eric would be shrunk to the size of a play toy, and that brought back that wide grin on his teenage face. It was not a nice, caring smile though, it was more like a sarcastic smile, a smile boys would make if they had something funny or ironic in mind or planed.
But the smile was short lived. Releasing the finger and staring at the console, than back to the circle Eric was, thank God, still standing in, Tommy began scratching at his head. The smile already had faded, and was replaced by a puzzled, confused face expression.
“What the heck!? ...”, to the picture of Tommy's puzzled face was added one of his eyebrows, slightly lifting up, and the side of his mouth moving in one direction more than the other while saying this.
Nothing had happened. No buzzing sound, no turning on of the machine, no lights coming out of the circle, nothing he had experienced before, when he had shrunk that chair for testing the machine.
“Dude...”, Eric, who just had watched the whole procedure with a very impatient but also unpleasant feeling, was coming back to life. He didn't like the whole idea from the first minute, mostly caused by Tommy's weird looking smile, but more importantly, that he had not told him what this machine was build for, or what it would do to him.
“This sucks, I'm going home. You don’t even know what you’re doing man, and I don’t want to get electrified by one of your weird Dad's inventions.”, saying this Eric started to put his right foot from inside the circle into mid-air, wanting to leave in direction of the door.
“My Dad isn't weird you looser. He's a great scientist. And I already told you it's totally sa...”, Tommy still confused by the fact nothing had happened, he wanted to tell his friend, again, that it is was absolutely safe to use the machine, a total lie of course.
But Eric was right, Tommy didn't know what he was doing. Strangely it had worked before, why wasn't it now? He had done all in the same way like he had done before, as far as he assumed, and in his teenager brain nothing occurred that he had maybe changed something on the settings when he had hit one of the sliders with his fingers. But that all that didn't matter now anyway, because Tommy couldn't finish his sentence.
Still before Tommy could finish his sentence, and before Eric could leave the circle, a bright flash light suddenly bursted out of the circles edges. It was more like a tiny explosion of light but also sound, causing a small shock wave to wander through the room.
The sudden light flash caused Tommy to hold his hands in front of his eyes as protection, but a fraction of a second later, he was also hit by the 'shock wave', leading to him get knocked over and landing on his butt. It was not a hard hit though, just like a gust of wind would hit you on a stormy day. But just as sudden and fast it all had happened, it was already over. And the room was silent again.
“Whoa...”, Tommy who sat on his butt, still having his hands in front of his face, opened his eyes and rubbed them with his fingers. “Dude!”, Tommy continued, “That was totally... AWESOME!! Wasn't it!?”. After a few more rubs to his eyes, he noticed he was knocked over and his butt was hurting a little bit, so he changed from rubbing his eyes, to more of rubbing his ass, “But now my butt hurts, hehe.”. Tommy already had forgotten the sudden and instant shock, smiling he began to sit up.
“What about you, does your butt also hurt?”, Tommy's smile grew larger again, but just like before, was very short lived. “Ahem, Eric?”. Tommy looked to the circle, where just moments before, his friend had stood in, but now it was all empty.
“It worked!!”, after the short confusion Tommy knew what had happened. The machine had turned on after a short period of warming up, and had shrunk his best friend to the size of a play toy, just like it had done before with that chair. “Where are you man?”, Tommy's grin exploded back on his face, and with that he walked over to the circle, also stepping inside to lift up his now play toy sized friend.
But the circle wasn't just 'empty' like it looked to Tommy from the panel, it was, really empty. There was no sign of anything inside, no play toy, a.k.a. Eric, nothing.
“What the hell...”, Tommy began starching his head again, and by doing so also doing a 360° turn inside the circle. And when his view fell on the door of the room, he knew what had happened. Because the door was now opened, where it wasn't a few moments before, because Tommy had closed the door when they had entered the room.
“Oh you fucking coward...”, Tommy slowly whispered to himself, and anger grew up inside of him. While he was hit by that shock wave and sat on his butt for a few moments, Eric used the opportunity to leave the room and run home, just like he had announced it.
Totally pissed about the afternoon now being ruined, he started to walk out of the circle, but his mind in total rage and frustration, he didn't move his foot high enough to step over the circles edges, and so, he hit it with his right shoe. That instant irritation caused Tommy to lose his balance and after a short second of trying to wander around on one foot which was still inside the circle, he lost the balance completely and landed on his but, for the second time on this day.
“Daaammn...”, Tommy cursed out loudly rubbing his now mostly sore butt. Sitting inside the circle, Tommy's already pissed off mood now was really busted. And this was all Eric's fault! Tomorrow he would knock him with his fist on the head as revenge. Standing up, Tommy began to leave the room, not even giving the machine another glimpse. This day was totally ruined now.
While passing through the still opened door, he used one hand to grab for the doors edge and hit it hard behind him, causing it to shut with a 'PANG'. Little did Tommy know, that the shock wave, which had knocked him over before, also had opened up the door again, because the door was build that it would open to the outside of the room, and not to its inside. More important was though, that Tommy had not closed the door when Eric and he had entered the room, he just had left it ajar.
And none of these important facts where existent in the careless, carefree teenager brain of Tommy. All he knew was, that, after coming up with the wrong conclusion, Eric had left the room and ran home, like a coward. And that Eric was a complete looser...
But what had really happened. And where was Eric?
