The machine had more modes than just shrinking ...

Tommy expected Eric to shrink the same way the chair had but that wasn't happening. Instead, an orange line of light started scanning Eric. Eric saw the light and stepped back so that he was partly outside the circle.

A voice from the machine said, "Subject not fully inside the circle. Please move subject fully inside the circle or subject may become damaged."

Tommy was quick to add, "See. It's dangerous for you to leave the circle."

Eric asked, "What's it going to do to me if I'm in the circle?"

Tommy said, "You saw the beginning of the light show. There's more to see."

Eric stepped back into the circle. The machine's voice said, "Subject is now safe from damage. Proceeding."

The orange light finished scanning Eric and finally Eric began to shrink but it was still not the same as how the chair had shrunk.
