He stopped to admire the window display of Robo2Go. A collection of human-form androids danced and gyrated behind the glass. Many of them imitated household tasks, cycling through a selection of preprogrammed movements - cooking, cleaning, ironing - while others struck more lascivious poses. Their polished metal limbs moved woodenly, awkwardly, almost human but not quite. Perhaps they would look a little less unsettling once skinned up, though he doubted it. A variety of rubber shells hung beside the robots, and further back in the shop he spied skins that had obviously designed for sexual [urposes.
As he considered whether Jessica would let him bring one into the house, even a non-sexualised version, the dark clouds overhead broke. In moments the highstreet was a torrential downpour and he clutched his shopping bags of consumer electronics to his chest and glanced around desperately for shelter. Only a few metres away a shiny, metal booth stood on the corner. Whether an antiquated phone booth or a public toilet, he didn't care and he sprinted for it. The door slid open smoothly as he neared, permitting him entry and closing behind him.
The interior of the booth was surprisingly comfortable, though for the moment he still couldn't figure out what purpose it served. In size, it was circular and just wide enough for him to stretch out his arms and touch both sides. The floor was metal and slightly sloped towards a drainage grill in the corner, though one too small to suggest it might be a toilet. The walls were padded and looked like they had been cleaned recently, while a strong citrus smell masked some other odour. A computer terminal was inserted into one wall. The air was well-heated, and he quickly found himself shrugging off his outer coat, his wet hair steaming.
As he set down his shopping bags, the computer terminal lit up. [Please insert card] Ah, so that explained it! It was a phone booth, how quaint. Perhaps he would ring Jessica and get her opinion on the android purchase. He couldn't wait to see her expression when she discovered he was calling her from a phone booth. He slipped his credit card into the machine and waited.
