..What?
You can't believe your eyes. That.. thing.. is a.. you don't even know. Is it a monster? It looks your height! It looks furry, and it..
..It looks like someone your age.
You stare, stunned at what you're seeing. It looks like some guy around your age.. with reddish orange fur.. and pointy ears. Basically, he looks like...
Holy shit.
Your next door neighbors have a furry. You wouldn't care to admit how much time you've spent looking at them, or how long you've imagined meeting a real one, but this is not imagination. This is real. There's an anthro fox living next door to you. You don't know how long you've been staring, but you know when he notices, and it scares you out of your mind. The next thing you know, he's at the fence line and looking you in the eye.. smiling. Your brain, it being its paranoid self, interprets the situation as a threat. This creature doesn't exist, and if it does, it probably will hurt you in ways you don't imagine. However, your mixed feelings throw your flight/fight response off and your feet freeze into place while your legs try to move, and you twist awkwardly without your consent and you collapse, the blood draining from your head momentarily.
"Woah, dude, are you okay?" You hear a voice of a teenage boy somewhere above your head, and you open your ey- wait, they were already open. Your vision floods back shakily and accompanied by the worst ringing of the ears you could imagine. You hear the question repeated, but you're still getting used to reality again and you can only half comprehend the fence post in the corner of your eye.
Time seems to speed up, and within a couple seconds you're on your feet again with the help of some hairy.. oh...
You turn your head to see the fox's face, though you find an unexpected expression of concern on it. You nod your head after a few seconds and stand up correctly, hesitating to thank the vulpine. "Uh.. yeah... thanks."
You think some more and realize that he's on the other side of the fence now. How did he go around it so fast, unless he jumped? No, there wasn't enough time for him to do that.. Your thoughts are interrupted by a question you didn't quite hear. Ringing ears, am I right?
"Sorry, what?" You ask shakily. The fox chuckles and nuzzles your ear unexpectedly while saying, "Aw, I know you heard me if I heard myself." You pout at him knowingly, and he laughs. He moved in yesterday and he's acting like a close friend... Well, more like man's best friend, anyway, considering you don't know any close friends who nuzzle a muzzle in your sch- okay I'm done.
"Kid, you look pale. Need me to walk you inside?"
He nods to your steps which, at the moment, look like a flight of stairs to the top of a skyscraper. You nod and agree; this guy is kind of likable, despite him being an.. animal. You're torn between avoiding him forever and making friends. Those damn sociable people. He walks you over to the door, and out of the corner of your eye you see him just.. smiling. He's just a happy guy from the looks of it. It reminds you of how moody you could be when you were younger, and occasionally recently. You almost envy him. What the hell is going on? He's like a best friend, but he's an animal and you've never met him before? Your thoughts end by the time you notice your mom examining your head to see if you're okay.
"Honey, you need to be more careful," your mother says almost cooingly.
You feel like such a kid. Everyone is treating you like something else - hell, your mom didn't notice the guy walk in and HE'S something else! What the hell?!
Your thinking is punctured by your mom's delicate, yet oh so valuable question, "Do you want to stay home, or do you think you'll be alright?"
You jump with happiness inside, but you have things to consider. There's that fox, and there's no guarantee that you won't get chores once you seem to be better.. but who's to say that one or both parents won't be out today?
"Well, Jesse?" You feel the deepest part of your brain cringing at the fox knowing your name without your consent. Your mom looks at you questioningly, and the fox only happily. You aren't getting any help from the environment, so it's time to make your own decision. You choose to..
