Kyoshi Academy was unlike any other place Sokka had ever seen. He had never beheld so many people in a single place at once, before, let alone so many girls. And, indeed, as Kyoshi had said, they were all girls. Not a single other male to be seen.
It was a little overwhelming for him, to be honest, and it was all he could do not to recoil and yelp in surprise when a short, slim, cheerful girl with bright, twinkling gray eyes seemed to suddenly pop up out of the ground right in front of him, for how instantly she appeared before Sokka.
"Hiii!" said girl, smiling brightly up at Sokka. She was dressed in the same fashion as he himself was, of course, and she had the blue arrow tattoos of a master airbender -- and the pate of her head was shorn and shaven, in the fashion of Air Nomad females. This did not detract from the cuteness of her smiling face, though.
"H-Hey," said Sokka lamely, a little caught off balance by this young girl's sudden appearance. "I'm new."
"Hi, New!" said the girl cheerily. "That's a funny name." She giggled, and Sokka looked sheepish. "Ah, I'm just kidding," the girl added, when she saw the expression on Sokka's face. "I know that's not really your name. You're the new girl!"
If it was possible, her smile seemed to widen even more.
"Uh, and who are you are you?" Sokka asked.
The girl laughed gaily, the sound high and clear, like wind chimes in a gentle breeze.
"Why, I'm your new best friend!" the girl told him. "But my name's Aanjing!"
She then did an impromptu backflip -- several feet into the air -- and Sokka tried not to focus too much on the view he had gotten of the girl's -- Aanjing's -- underclothes as she floated back to the ground, her skirt fluttering about in the air currents she was generating with her bending.
Aanjing then laughed again, as though she had just remembered a very funny joke.
"C'mon," she said, grabbing Sokka by the wrist -- and her hands were small, and soft, but strong as well, in a subtle sort of way, "We don't want you to late for class on your first day here!"
And off they went, Sokka stumbling clumsily after the nimble, energetic Aanjing as the friendly, cheerful girl dragged him off to class.
Did they get there in time, or were they late? Or did they get waylaid by someone else before they could even get there? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
