Sean and Kat arrived at Westmont State, both of them determined to get into a fraternity and sorority. As popular people in high school, each of them figured their rightful place was at the top of any college greek hierarchy, and figured it would not be a problem.
As recruitment got going, Sean found a group of guys that he thought he fit in very well with. Delta Delta Phi had a cool house, and the guys seemed to enjoy drinking beer and partying more than any of the other frats on campus. In fact, during recruitment, Sean figured he would need to work out more, with the thousands of alcohol calories he was now consuming as part of his diet. For him, getting into the frat would be no problem, for Kat, it was a different story.
Kat went to sorority recruitment with the same cockiness that Sean did, however, she did not realize that in order to get into a sorority, there was a bit of kissing up that needed to be done, something Kat did not excel in. She quickly determined that she would try to rush Delta Phi Eta, a sorority that she believed had the hottest girls on campus, a place where Kat knew she would fit in. However, while talking to the current members, Kat stepping in it many times, often bringing up shortcoming of other people in the room, not realizing that sorority sisters talk, and every single insult she hurled would be communicated to the person at the receiving end.
"Oh my gosh, look at that girl, why even put on make-up if you're going to over do it and come off like a slut?" She said of one member. Or another favorite, "Wow, that must have been a close acceptance vote."
Yet, Kat saved her greatest outrage for when Vanessa, one of the larger girls walked in, Kat almost had a heart attack while she was talking with the sorority president, Karen, "Oh no. That girl is huge. How much weight did she gain?" Kat asked Karen.
"Sorry? I don't know what you mean?" Karen asked, wondering if this freshman she was talking to was for real.
"That plump girl over there, obviously you would never let in a blimp like that."
"Her name is Vanessa, and she's always been a bit...larger."
"Oh, well..." and Kat changed the subject.
What Kat may have mis-projected as elitism was more properness by the sorority members, and when secret voting rolled around later in the week, none of the members held Kat in very high regard. Most members wanted to reject her flat out, a message that although they were hot, and ran in the highest of social circles at Westmont State, they were not going to ever tolerate someone that mean spirited. But then, Karen changed the groups mind;
"Hey, I know we all hate this Kat girl," she said, speaking at the bottom of a lecture hall, with a projection of Kat's photo on the screen behind her, "But I think we should do something worse than rejecting her. Let her in."
The room of around 50 girls collectively shot a look at Karen, and someone even yelled out, "serious?"
"Yes. Let's let her in, but throughout the semester, secretly wreck her body and looks. She'll try to fit in and we can exploit that. She needs to see how arrogant she is acting."
