Zoe didn't have a real last name, being an orphan, but she liked to call herself Zoe Herbert after her favorite author Frank Herbert. She lived in the Utica Orphanage Asylum, in Utica, New York. She had short red hair, with green eyes. She had a slight farmer's tan, contrary to the popular ginger stereotype, and freckles along her cheekbones. Her teeth weren't perfect, but she didn't care as much as the other girls her age did. The orphanage she had lived in most of her life was an all girls orphanage, but Zoe preferred the company of other boys instead of most girls. She was one of the average tomboys, she knew how to throw a punch and a baseball better than some of her friends even. Yet despite all her confidence, she was wracked with anxiety.
There were two main reasons for being anxious. One of those reasons was understandable. She was a closeted lesbian in a conservative Upstate New York Oneida County, where the majority of the people where conservative Republican.
The other reason why she was anxious was because one day a week after her fifteenth birthday she discovered that she could breath underwater.
She had discovered this with Frankie, the only person who knew she was a lesbian. One of Frankie's friends from school, Jeremy, was being picked on by several wealthy kids from North Utica High School. Frankie had gone over to fight the boys on the beach deck where they were hanging out. One of the bigger boys from the North side picked Frankie up and threw him into the water. Frankie was a midget, and therefore landed in twelve feet deep water. And he couldn't swim, so he preceded to drown.
Zoe hadn't intended on fighting the other boys, she was only 5'3 and 120 pounds and there were five of them, so she had tried to dive into the water. As she was running, she had tripped, yelling "Aw crap!" and crashed face first into the water without holding her breath. She swam down twelve feet and carried her unconscious friend up to shore a good thirty feet down the lake. When she brought him to land, she did CPR and revived him. As Frankie gasped for air, he saw that she had gills on her neck.
They found out that the gills disappeared once she was all dry, and only reappeared once she went deep enough under water. The duo then began their search as to why she had gills, and that she should keep a supply of scarves ready at hand.
