"Well," the woman paused, double checking the notes on her chart. "You're life is going to be rented to your mother, Elizabeth."
"My MOM!" Lisa cried out, shocked by the revelation. "You... you can't do that can you? I mean... my mom? Isn't there a problem with that? Some kind of conflict of interest or something?" she asked.
"Well, not strictly speaking no. Honestly, we do this sort of thing between parents and children frequently, and with the recommendation of a licensed therapist, we'll even do it for children under eighteen. It's often helpful for parents to spend some time in their child's life to better understand their children, and it can be helpful for the child as well. In this case though, it looks like you just happened to fit your mother's criteria for the life she was looking to rent."
"What were her criteria?" Lisa asked, trying to understand why her mom would be wanting to rent her life.
"Oh, they were pretty basic. Young, pretty, going on an interesting summer vacation. I think she just wants to cut loose a little bit, and maybe relive some of her younger years, which isn't uncommon for women her age. The big thing that you need to remember is that for the next ten days, you're going to be Elizabeth Hale and she's going to be Lisa. Since she's going to be on your class trip for most of that time, you don't need to worry too much about interacting with her, but for the next few days before she leaves, it's important to 'stay in character.' Try not to talk to her like she's your mother... and try not to treat her differently than she treats you."
"I can do that, I guess," Lisa said, very nervous about the whole thing.
"Good," the woman replied, beginning to set up the equipment for the transfer. "Now, if you'll disrobe and settle into the chair, we can get things under way."
