Lisa really wasn't expecting this to happen so quickly. Sure she was agreeing to switch lives with this Jinghua Zhao but she also expected to at least spend a night or two with her own family before giving them over to a complete stranger. Still, it was now or never. Literally.
Tina could see some hesitation coming from Lisa's face. Worried that Lisa might back out, Tina moved quickly to put her at ease and get her to sign the necessary paperwork before she changed her mind. "I know this is kinda sudden and unexpected Ms. Hale. But from all the swaps that I've overseen, people who do switch the soonest when they make up their minds tend to be the happiest. I think it's the dread that comes along with saying goodbye to your old life." she told Lisa.
Lisa kinda understood where Tina was coming from even though it was a completely made up story that Tina used to try and keep the sale. "Okay Tina, what do I need to do?" Lisa asked.
Tina typed away on her keyboard for a minute and then Lisa heard the printer next to Tina's computer start printing. She pulled out a few sheets of paper and looked them over before handing them over to Lisa. Lisa was curious about what the documents were when Tina told her as she started to read them. "This is your basic contract with The Nexus authorizing us to perform a life swap between you and a third party. In this case as you can see here it is Jinghua Zhao and here is her client id that matches the dossier that you picked out. All I need you to do is sign on these three pages." Tina told her in a business like manner.
Hesitating for a moment, Lisa gave into the pressure and signed the contract without reading most of it. She at least verified that she was indeed switching lives with Jinghua Zhao and it included some other stuff on the addendum that she didn't bother reading. As soon as Lisa finished, Tina took the contract back and filed it into a manila folder. She then told Lisa "Excellent. Now let's head over to the transference room.
Lisa followed Tina out of the office and down a couple flights of stairs before finding herself in a weird futuristic looking room. It was immaculately white and nearly empty with the exception of a couple pieces of furniture. What stuck out the most was the giant chair in the middle of the room that resembled some kind of dentist chair with a clear looking dish folded off to the side.
"Okay Ms. Hale, the first thing I need you to do is get undressed when I leave and put this on." Tina told Lisa. She opened a compartment on the wall and pulled out a gown that looked like it came from a hospital. Lisa took the gown and placed it down on the chair. "Once you're in the gown, have a seat in the chair. I'll come back to give you Ms. Zhao's belongings and take yours over to her. Everything from here on out is both automated and painless."
This relieved Lisa. For a moment after seeing the hospital gown, she thought that this might be complicated or painful. Even though she was still not sure about going through with this, it at least helped to know that it wouldn't hurt. "Okay. How long do I have until this happens?" Lisa asked.
Tina looked at her watch and said "Ms. Zhao should have arrived a couple minutes ago. As soon as both of you are in your chairs, we'll get this procedure underway. Do you have any other questions?"
"Nope." Lisa said. Tina quickly hurried out of the room and closed the door. As soon as she was alone, Lisa began to undress. She was really nervous. Before today, nobody could have convinced her that she was about to basically become a Chinese woman. As Lisa pulled off her clothes, she thought about the pictures of Jinghua. Although she didn't look like a model, Lisa thought she was reasonably pretty. Completely naked, Lisa placed all of her belongings on the chair by the door and put on the gown. Tying the back up, Lisa thought "Hopefully being Jinghua will be exciting."
With the gown on, Lisa climbed into the chair. She waited for a couple minutes for whatever that was supposed to happen to happen. The room was somewhat chilly and she felt a slight draft blow under her thin gown from the air conditioning. She was about to get up and go look for Tina when she heard the chair start to hum and the clear dish unfolded and pointed right at her face. Then she heard Tina though an intercom system "Okay Ms. Hale, the transference will commence in 10...9...8..."
Lisa laid back and closed her eyes. Once she heard Tina finish the countdown, she became dizzy and lost consciousness....
