The First Age in Arda is a turbulent time in which the Noldor return to Middle-Earth to regain their lost Silmarils; destinies entwine in various ways unpredicted by both elves and men.
Above all, the opressing hand of Morgoth Bauglir, the Black Vala holds the continent in it's grip, ever seeking to dominate it.
He harbours a keen hatred towards all of the Free People of Middle-Earth - the elves, men, and dwarves.
One could presume that his hatred results in either killing or dominating those who opose them, but what if Melkor wants to mock Ilúvatar's creation?
Oh, let's play with those gracious and tall elven maidens, with slim and athletic females of men and sturdy (and bearded) dwarven lassies.
Let's make them fat; let fat engulf their frames until they cannot move by themselves...
