Princess Celestia looked out over the rolling landscape right up to the horizon marked out by the distant mountains that marked the Western limits of the Everfree Forest; despite the beliefs of many of Her subjects, even those who'd experienced the forest more than most, the forest wasn't nearly as scary or dangerous as legend claimed. Nopony could deny the fact that there were dangerous animals within those woods but they either had weaknesses anypony could exploit or they were open to persuasion.
If She was honest with Herself Celestia actually felt some desire to revisit the original royal grounds of the First Age, after all nothing under those trees could touch Her and the physical trials and tribulations of the Everfree seemed like a picnic compared to the snooty egotistic complaints that the so-called nobility kept coming to Her with. She continued to glance over the rim of Her teacup as Princess Luna stepped out into the soft warmth of the afternoon sun.
"Celestia," She addressed, "Have you deliberately boosted the Sun's heat output for this afternoon?"
"No." She answered, turning to Her sister. "But I have arranged for a slight alteration in this afternoon's weather." Luna took a seat across from Her. They made Their greetings and Celestia offered Luna a cup before They settled back down into silence. After a while Luna asked about Celestia's day, prompting Her to open Her heart to Her sister about the dull tedious nature of Canterlot's elite and their whinging.
"Sometimes," Celestia admitted, "I'd like to just drop the crown and cut loose as an individual pony."
"Maybe you could." Luna replied after a while. "If you're willing to take a night off my shoulders once again I could carry a day for you." Celestia smiled and sighed as She considered the idea before answering.
"But what could I do? We're not exactly the kinds of ponies who could blend in with the crowd." Luna looked out at the scene of Equestria West of Canterlot before She cocked an eyebrow and lifted a hoof up while closing one eye, Her gaze fixed upon Ponyville.
"Perhaps you could go abroad." She suggested. "There are places in the world beyond the current reaches of ponies and then some we could reach as easily as a pony might take a trip to Fillydelphia." Celestia seemed unsure still, thinking about what She could do in one of these untouched lands. "Or maybe you could slip past our dearest subjects unnoticed." Luna gave Her a wink. There was a pause as Celestia picked up on Her meaning.
"You mean...?" Celestia's look of realisation fell into a sly cheeky expression. "Yes, it would be fun. One day there might be an indestructible bug buzzing round the palace, the next a certain town might find itself in the role of a playground for a giant monster." Luna raised Her drink to Her sister as a gesture of triumph. "But we can't just take time off willy-nilly. We'll have to plan for this."
Which days will They choose? Shall it be that Mondays Luna shrinks, Sundays Celestia grows, Thursdays Celestia shrinks and Fridays Luna grows?
