Chapter #3

Cosmic Corpulence.

Jennie Tyler was a very beautiful, very young, and very rich woman. She had curly golden hair that reached down to just below her shoulders and parted to frame her heart shaped face, as well as keeping any hair from falling to cover her dark brown eyes. She had always been much taller than most her age, but Jennie was kept underweight by her father to make up for that “imperfection”. Similarly, she had been forced to wear many cosmetics, to keep any imperfections from showing up on her face, only now she only wore what was necessary to keep bags or dark circles from forming under her eyes from the many hard hours, sometimes even days of work; like dealing with some of the companies more illegal dealings.

“…I don’t care how much money we’ll lose, I want you to have those mines closed, and our workers and equipment out of Tollis space by the end of the month, but if you’re not up to the task I can easily find someone who is, I’ll check in on you Saturday to check your progress or lack there of.” The hologram projection on Jennie’s desk flashed out, and she sighed as she crossed out another one of her newly inherited company’s many injustices; she could just feel her father rolling over in his grave at her poor business choice each time she corrected one.

Shaking the thought from her head, Jennie turned to look out the window of her home office, and observed as the systems blue sun crept its way up into the sky, watching it for a good minute before deciding that having some alcohol in her system might make the view better; it had a way of making everything feel a little better. In fact, ever since she inherited her fathers company at seventeen, she had been using alcohol to help with the stress, and two years later, still non of the servants had questioned why the liquor cabinet in what was once her fathers office was looking a little more depleted every day, when nobody could have taken anything.

Unfortunately, before she could even open the drawer she had hidden the cabinet key, she was interrupted by one of her servants. “Good morning Mistress, I hope I’m not intruding on anything.” The servant said, bowing slightly.

“Not at all, I was just enjoying the sunrise.”

“I see, then may I fetch you something from the kitchen to enjoy while you watch?”

“Yes, something to drink would be nice, thank you. I have just finished with a long meeting that has left my throat rather dry.” She lied, what she really wanted was something to buy her time while she could make a real drink.

“Right away, Mistress,” The servant then gave another bow and left Jennie’s office, closing the door behind them.

Jennie let out a sigh. She didn’t even need any of her servants, or her chefs, or even the groundskeepers, she could have sold the mansion she called home and let them all go, but she couldn’t stand the thought of all those people left unemployed, so she kept them on, basically only taking care of each other. Yet another thought that depressed her. Jennie wished she had someone who would take care of her, one that she didn’t have to pay to smile at her, but that wasn’t the life she had, and she’d just have to deal with it.

Or at least that’s what she had convinced herself.

“Here you are, Mistress.” The servant said, setting down a tray down on desk and snapping Jennie out of her trance. “The cooks insisted that I bring you something to eat as well, they say that they wish you would have them cook for you more often.”

Jennie looked down at the tray that was loaded with breakfast foods, along with two tall glasses; one filled with a blue liquid, and the other one was filled with water and had a single a rose in it. “Well, give them my apologies; I’ve not had much of an appetite lately.”

“As long as you’re healthy and are not wasting away, Mistress, that’s all that matters. Now, is there anything else I can do for you?” The servant asked, giving Jennie a smile, which she had to admit, was one of the best fakes she’d ever seen.

“No, that will be all; you can come back in ten minute’s to collect the tray I’ll be done by then. I also might retire to my room soon; I have been up for a few days now after all.” Jennie said, trying to justify her tiredness to herself more than to the servant.

“I understand, enjoy your meal, Mistress.”

“Wait,” Jennie called out just as the servant began to leave. “Could you…please not call me Mistress anymore?” She asked, hoping that just one person would use her name, a name she’s never heard anyone use in her whole life.

“Would you rather I call you Ms. Tyler instead? Would that be better?”

Even if that was her family’s name, it wasn’t her name, and she’d rather be just a title than the family name. “…Yes…yes it would.” But she couldn’t ask to be called that after asking not to, she’d look like a fool.

Thirty minutes later, Jennie tucked herself into her bed, pulling the blanket up to her chest. She ate as much as she could of her breakfast, but about a quarter of the way through she was starting to not feel hungry and stopped, just as she had been taught. When she got comfortable she closed her eyes tight, and tried to fight to hold back her lonely tears as she wept silently, so she would not concern any passing servants or housekeepers with her sobs, eventually falling asleep.

She dreamt the same dream she had been dreaming for as long as she could remember. She was alone, in darkness, curled up in the fetal position and in intense physical, mental and emotional pain; afraid that the rest of her life was going to be like this, and so far, it looked like it was.

The next day, the dream ended as she was woken up, opening her eyes, she saw the one who saved from her nightmare. “Good morning…

…Mist-I mean…Ms. Tyler, did you sleep well?” The one who saved her from the nightmare is a maid named Marie, the one who served her breakfast the day before.

…Ms. Tyler, I hope you slept well.” Her butler Rodger has woken her up, and he’s brought her another tray of food for breakfast. (Meaning Marie didn’t.)

...it's time to rise and shine." A sizable portion of the staff has come to check up on her; they've been so worried about her lately!

(Edit: I made a mistake involving a character in this, and in another storyline, but they're gone now.)
