You are Kate Richards. Or you used to be, anyway. Years ago, you had gone into a transformation clinic to have your brain upgraded with a few cybernetic enhancements. Unfortunately for you, while you were under, the doctors operating on you decided to remove your brain entirely for research on a secret project of theirs. To keep anyone from getting suspicious, an AI duplicate of your mind was installed and sent along its merry way, none the wiser that it had left your real brain behind.
When your brain first regained consciousness it was unable to see, hear, or feel, as you had been kept isolated from any sensory equipment, though this was remedied after a few days. Although you didn't know it at the time, the scientists who had stolen your brain were researching the possibility of granting a normal human psionic powers, and sensory isolation was just one technique they attempted. For the longest time they worked on your brain, slicing, probing, stimulating and analyzing, trying anything they could think of to give you extraordinary psychic powers. They even once saturated your life support with psychoactive drugs.
Unfortunately, while they succeeded, you were not the spectacular psionic prodigy they expected you to be. You could sense the world around you without sensors, but anything more than this required a special device, which they were understandably reluctant to hook up to you. However, one day, while they were studying your ability to use it, you managed to sneak out a psychic signal that completely rewrote the personality of one of the guards to be utterly loyal to you. Using this to your advantage, you managed to bring several more personnel under your thrall before you were found out. In a panic, you had your new minions smuggle you and the prototype psionic amplifier out of the facility.
In the years since then, you have been on the run, staying one step ahead of the conspiracy, as you have no wish to be recaptured. To fund your efforts, you have turned to piracy, and have garnered an infamous reputation as The Sinister Brain! While the most important members of your crew have all been subjected to the psionic amplifier to ensure their loyalty, you have had to be careful. The amplifier emits a unique energy signature when active, and is both complex and fragile. Overuse of it has on several occasions nearly rendered it inoperable, given away your position, or both. In fact, it was damaged in your latest raid. While fixable, it will be expensive, and you need to find some way to repair it soon.
To that end you have put down your ship in a somewhat isolated world in the Velusian cluster. One of your porters is carrying you around town in a transparent glass container with a speaker on it when you encounter...
