'If nobody's heard from other colonies, Solace might be on the hunt for someone.' You said. 'Sorry Keirra, if that's the case we shouldn't be out unnecessarily.' You gave her a quick apologetic hug, feeling her slump in disappointment.
'Then what are we supposed to do?' She asked, almost frustrated but ultimately used to the regular disappointments.
'Don't worry, we'll figure something out.' You try to keep her in a good mood. 'And it's only a few hours, then we need to go anyway. But we'll have to be super careful, okay?'
'Alriiiight.' Keirra sighed. You nodded your thanks to the guards and the attendant and then the two of you headed back towards the centre of town. 'We'll find something else to do, okay?'
About an hour passed and Keirra was driving you mad with her boredom. Or she would be if you weren't well enough versed in dealing with it by now. Your stomach growled and you reluctantly ate a tiny portion of the crusted over bread you had in your stash to alleviate the pain. Keirra seemed to be coping better with her own hunger, but then you had always tried to make sure she was well fed before you worried about yourself. She was fidgeting near the window of your tiny dwelling, staring out wistfully at the cracks in the ceiling above. You'd get the call in another hour or so to report for duty.
'Keirra, why not just take a nap?' You suggested. 'We'll be out of here soon.' Keirra stayed silent, so you shrugged and rolled onto your back, drifting into a light sleep.
You jerked yourself awake with a sudden cough and rolled onto your side. Something had caught in your throat while you were sleeping, and you coughed violently as you tried to dislodge it. After a few more moments of sputtering you could breathe again, and you lifted your gaze to look at Keirra.
She wasn't here. Your breath caught again and your heart skipped a beat. Where could she be? You scrambled to your feet and bolted outside, scanning the town around you for any sign of her. She wasn't nearby, dammit she must have gone out on her own! You ran to the gate that leads to the upwards tunnel and stop to catch your breath.
'Miss, are you alright?' One of the guards asked.
'Did Keirra come through here?' You asked, eyes pleading for an answer.
'The short grey girl?' He asked. 'Yes, she said she was heading out. Even after the warning. If she's yours-'
'Dammit!' You rushed past the guard and out the gateway despite his protests and headed up into the apartment. This new area was huge, like a living area you might have called home if you were ten time richer. And a hundred times larger.
'Keirra...?' You whispered, glancing around as you rushed to prop yourself against a gigantic sofa. You followed it around and saw another doorway that lead into a new room. You were about to keep searching when you heard a voice. A voice you knew, a voice that made your fur stand on end...
'You saw what happened to those runts in the closet.' Solace said, glaring at her tiny prisoner. You had managed to get close enough to the door to see inside, and as you feared Keirra had managed to get herself caught.
Keirra said something in reply, but her voice was too quiet and shaky for you to make out. Solace simply giggled and lifted Keirra to her face, opening her maw. If you were still planning to save her... it would have to be now.
