Can you help these poor mice survive, or will your decisions be the death of them?
This choice: "The punishment is death."  •  Go Back...
Chapter #4

It was all a mistake. All of it.

    by: Flynn-Coyote Author IconMail Icon
Don't befriend a micen. The words repeated in your head again. No words came to you.
'Solace...?' Gertrude seemed to have lost some of her previous bravado and now showed a slight hint of fear towards you. Not towards what might happen. Towards you. It was about time. But still not soon enough.
'This was...' You began, your mind racing with thoughts driven by fury and an ever growing hunger. 'This was all just a mistake, wasn't it?' You raised your gaze to the ceiling as you spoke, as if there might be some clarity to be found there. But naturally there wasn't.
'She couldn't have kno-' Gertrude began, only to be swiftly silenced as your fist came down on the counter.
'Not her...' You snarled, shaking your head as your eyes bored into hers. 'I mean this... Desio. Treating micen with even some small respect. And what do I get back?'
'Solace, what are you saying?' Gertrude cried, seeing the rage in your eyes and hugging Uschi even tighter. The younger micen still held her courage for the moment, having dried her tears and kept her arms wrapped securely around her mother.
You were silent. What were you saying? Never befriend a micen. 'Never befriend a micen...' You repeated the thought in a soft murmur.
'What...?' Gertrude stood and slowly let go of Uschi, taking a step towards your hand. 'Solace... You don't mean that!'
'They'll leave you.' You continued. 'Sooner than you think.'
'Solace!' Gertrude pleaded with you now. 'Don't... Please don't do this.' You looked back at her and took a deep breath. Maybe you could... If only there was... No.
'Take off the suit.' You said calmly, belying the rage that still hissed furiously in your mind. 'Give it back.'
This time Gertrude was silent. She gave a look back at Uschi, then forward to you. Something seemed to register in her own mind before a tear left her eye and rolled down her cheek. 'It doesn't have to be like this...' She begged, almost in a whisper so quiet you barely caught what she said.
'Uschi is a micen. She broke the rules.' You growled. 'You've watched plenty die for less than this.'
         'That was different!' Gertrude protested.
'Because you didn't care for them.' You snapped. 'Oh don't get me wrong Gertrude, I know why you're being like this now. But I just can't have it! If it was something small, fine. But Uschi here just broke one of the biggest rules a few dozen times over. How is it going to look if she just walks away after this?'
'I can't watch my baby die...' Gertrude broke down into sobbing. You might have felt sorry. You might have changed your mind. You might have settled for a lesser punishment. But even the sight of Gertrude and Uschi both in tears in each others' arms wasn't enough to dissuade you from how utterly furious this whole mess of a situation had made you.
'Take off the friggin suit!' You snarled. 'I'm done with this! All of it! You wanna be with your baby, Gertrude? Then be with her. You can both piss off and live with knowing that you've ruined any chance that any micen might have of getting away from me again!'
Gertrude's eyes went wide with sheer terror. You had made the choice clear. She gives up Uschi and things can continue as they were... mostly. Or she could give up everything she had for the sake of her child. But not just for herself. This decision would affect everyone. Desio would be gone. Micen would once more have to live in fear of being found by the great blue huntress... All for the sake of Uschi.
Gertrude raised a hand to the zipper of her suit... She gave one more look between Uschi and you. And then...

You have the following choices:

1. "Goodbye, Solace."

*Noteb*
2. Uschi steps forward.

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
