You made the trudge you've been dreading for some time. You had to go check out your family's dilapidated old 'summer home' (a cute name for a house your father bought, intending to flip it, but then he broke his leg... and then the car needed new tires, winter storms, and so on and so forth).
It belonged to an elderly couple who had sold it to your dad before moving into a nursing home. It was a quaint 'little' cottage on the outskirts of the town. Stones and gravel kicked at your car as you approached the house. You and your dad were worried that with all the winter storms that hit, that perhaps there was structural/roof damage done. And since Dad was still in a cast, this task was left to you.
The door's lock opened after a few tries, the light from outside cascading along the front hallway. It was then that you smelled it... that... dusty... musty... 'sawdust' kind of odor. Your thoughts first went to worried about the water pipes, perhaps they had burst? You stalked down the hall into the living room, and that's when you first see it... the back porch door had been knocked down and the screen door torn apart.
Jeezus... had someone broke into the house? That thought crossed your mind as you approached the back of the house. Then you noticed... some feathers... lotsa feathers actually... covering the floor... going in the direction (if your memory was still correct) of the master bedroom. You carefully picked one of these up... and noticed it was quite the large feather.
You now wished you had a crow bar, a tire iron, or even a BIG STICK on you as you slowly walked down the hall leading to said bedroom. There were scratches along the wall, and the door looked like it had seen better days as you peeked your head into the room...
