On a long stretch of road in rural Kansas FBI agents Mulder and Scully are discussing the strange happenings going on at a farm in the town of Pearce.
"What they got for us this time Mulder?"
"According to our debrief over the past week several cattle have gone missing from a local farm."
Scully turns to him and gives him a quizzical look.
"And?"
"And... that's it."
"I don't understand Mulder. How is this an FBI matter? Cattle go missing all the time. Predators. Thieves. They run off.
"One, there was no sign of damage to any of the fencing. Two, no traces or remains of any of the cattle have been located. And three, are you ready for this? No hoof prints found around the surrounding area."
"So what? They just vanished?"
"Or teleported." Mulder chuckles
"Don't tell me you think they were abducted by aliens?"
"I don't know about that but all I will say is that something strange is going on."
The agents arrive at the farmer's address. They pull off to the side of the road and see that the farmhouse is to their right down a walking path. They both stare at the stereotypical farmhouse in the distance along with a barn and several cows grazing in the field. Scully is a bit unnerved but still doesn't feel there is anything overly strange going on here.
"Alright I'll approach first then radio to you when we get the all clear to do a through investigation."
"Why on Earth would we do that? Why wouldn't we meet the owner together?"
"Scully, I know these middle American types. Things are so boring out here that even if something isn't going on that want to believe it is."
"You kind of sound like your describing yourself there partner."
"My point is that if we approach this by shutting down their theories about whats going on; whether it be aliens, cattle thieves, or devil worshiping cults, we're much more likely shunned by the locals. People here are already skeptical of the government. What we are seeking is truth. And truth is a lot easier to swallow when you have tangible pieces of evidence. To find that, we need to be given full access to the scene."
"But why do I have to stay in the car?"
"One, you're too much of a skeptic. They'll see right through you. And two, you're a little too intimidating."
With that Agent Mulder exits and begins walking down the path towards the farm, leaving Scully alone in the car.
