STORY START: Milly, The Quater-Inch Tall Fox

    by: NickNack Author IconMail Icon
As long as she could remember, Milly had always been a tiny fox, as were her whole family. She was adamant that they were the only tiny furries anywhere, as she hadn't seen nor heard of any other miniscule species before.

Many years ago, the quarter-inch tall fox had lost her family when she slept, tired from her ventures in the house that they had occupied under the floorboards. With no idea what had happened to them, Milly had to fend for herself, to survive for herself. At the age of 18, it was incredible how mature she was. The harsh reality of her world forced her to be so, just gathering food for herself was a dangerous feat.

The house she lived in sure didn't belong to her, but to a female huskey of "normal" height. Of course, height was relative to Milly as the huskey was hundreds of feet tall from her point-of-view. Bella, she was called.

Bella was a Syberian Huskey, 26 years of age. As far as Milly could tell from living in her house, hidden in plain sight, Bella was a student, but of what she was not sure. Milly did her best to stay away from her, only coming out of living space whenever Bella was out of the house and only then would she go looking for supplies to keep her living. It was a shallow life to some, but the basics of nature is to survive, after all. And this was her life.

When Bella was in the house, Milly would be resting under the floorboards in the living room that was thankfully the room next to the kitchen. Small bits of food and crumbs could be found everywhere here, and if it happened to be that Bella had cleaned her house, it wasn't far for Milly to venture to go to the kitchen.

Life under the floorboards was no fun though. Whenever Bella or her friends walked around, the thought that the were mere feet above her scared Milly to the core. When Milly was younger, she sometimes had nightmares of a giant paw falling through the ceiling just above her, crushing her into nothing but bloody matter. However, as she grew older, her fear subsided and it was nothing more than everyday reality to her, something she just dealed with on a day-to-day basis.

Milly had always wondered what would happen if she had revealed herself to Bella, but just the shear sight of the giant dog was too much to bare and it was better to be safe than sorry especially for a fox who was as small as she was. But there were times when she observed the giant hound, that she would become jealous the simple things. Clothes were one such example. Milly was fine in her natural orange and white fur, with the hot water pipes only mere inches away from her in the floor keeping her warm, but she thought that it would be nice to be able to dress up once in a while. Being able to have a wash whever you wanted would be nice too. But life went on for Milly and she was never bitter about her situation.

--- --- ---

Milly had waited under the floor, her usual 30 minute wait to make sure the silence she heard meant that Bella had left the house confirmed she was alone. It was early afternoon, and it was time for her rounds to find food.

As she made her way to the surface of the living room through the small cracks between the boards, she hoped for what she might find. I'm sure I could smell bacon cooking earlier... Milly thought to herself. She had been living on bits of cheese and bread for the past couple of weeks. She hoped one day she could have a choice in what she had to eat, somehow, someway.

She crawled onto the laminate floorboard and began to make her way to the kitchen, an easy 10 minute walk for her, but she liked to have a run and get her exercise, it was a cramped life under the floor so why not. As she ran for the kitchen, she scanned the living room for any bits of food, anything she could grab to keep her going.

And to her luck, she spotted some bread in the direction she was heading. And she could smell bacon too! Maybe, just maybe, there may be a small slither of meat for her to nibble on. As she closed in on the bread, the smell of bacon became stronger. And it wasn't long until her paws began to stick to the floor. Before she could wonder what it was her feet were sticking to, she slipped and tripped with a splat on her back, her fur and tail instantly becoming stuck to the...

"Grease... Oh God...!" Milly yelped. It was grease that must've dripped from Bella's sandwhich! She had never had a problem like this before, this was a new situation. She was glued to the floor, in the middle of the living room of the giant female huskey...
