They were barely half a block away from the school when the girl froze in her tracks. Then she started to scream.
"HELP! Police! Help police!"
Jessica looked at her with a stunned expression.
"What are you doing?" Jessica hissed.
"Sorry, but we'll never make it anywhere as long as one of us in that uniform," the girl said smugly. "This way the cops will stop looking for me and I can get away."
"But..."
"Help police! She's got my purse!"
The two uniformed officers turned the corner at a run.
"Look, this isn't what it looks..." Jessica began.
One of the cops tackled her, taking her down and knocking the wind out of her. The other officer retrieved Jessica's fallen purse and handed it to her betrayer.
"Thanks Miss. Here's your purse. Don't worry, she's going back to where she belongs."
Jessica was still gasping as the officer cuffed her wrists and swung her over her his shoulder in a fireman's carry. The officers practically ran as they carried her back to the school. She was inside it before she got her breath back enough to talk.
Smiling, the girl fished through Jessica's purse, looking for a phone.
