You decide to throw away just your two lowest cards, hoping to pick up another king; or better yet, a third ace. You aren't so lucky, however, as all you're rewarded with are an off-suit four and seven. You bite your lip thoughtfully, a tick you've had long enough that you barely notice it anymore. You know a pair of aces is a pretty strong hand, and the king just adds extra insurance. You're not likely to win the hand, but you're almost certain you won't lose. What are the odds of all four of the other girls having at least two pair?
"Hey, relax. It's just a game, right?" Ellie casually smiles at you. She's obviously noticed how nervous you are. You realize your little tick could give away more about future hand than you'd like, so you make a note to try and keep it under control. You're not confident you'll be able to, however, given how long you've gone without breaking that particular habit.
"Right, uh...yeah." you smile back uneasily as the last few cards are swapped out. "Sorry. Just a little nervous, I guess." It isn't just about the prospect of losing your clothes, although that's certainly part of it. Some people have a knack for talking to new people and being in the group spotlight. You are not one of those people. You're worried you'll say something dumb and embarrass yourself, or that you'll be the first one out and have to sit there naked as a jaybird while the other girls laugh about you.
Everyone shows their cards while you nervously chew your lip. To your surprise, your hand is the strongest after all, as most of the girls had some sort of pair. Only Sunny comes up short, with just a queen to her name. A little rush of relief eases your nerves. It's just one hand, but still. Sunny pulls off her gloves, flexing her fingers and cheerily commenting on how much easier it'll be for her to hold her cards now.
As the next set of cards are dealt, Serena's bright smile finds it way to your corner of the table. It's obvious she's some sort of social butterfly, at least compared to you and the other girls in the group, so the fact that she doesn't immediately break eye contact makes you just a little nervous.
"What?" You stammer out quickly, sounding slightly annoyed entirely by accident. You remedy that immediately. She seems nice; all these girls do. You don't want to give any of them the wrong impression. "I mean, uh, is there...something on my face or something?" you ask nervously.
"Oh, no, not at all. I was just thinking that you are probably very pretty when you smile, but that you also seem very nervous. You should try and relax and enjoy the game." Serena said, picking up her new hand without a care in the world.
You blush, at a loss as to how you might even reply to the Pokemon trainer. You certainly don't mind the compliment, but having someone just come right out and say it is kind of embarrassing. Besides, has your nervousness really been that obvious?
"Don't...worry about Serena." Clem says wryly. "She says things without really thinking about them first. Seriously, though, loosen up a little. We're all here to have fun. And it's not like any of us are going to see anything we don't all have, right?"
You laugh sheepishly and agree, looking at your new hand.
