You walk through the wheat field slowly, boonie hat pulled low on your brow to shade your eyes from the blazing sun, scanning for any signs of movement, human or---. You shudder at that last thought, "its hard to believe its been three months, feels like days" you think to yourself. You think back to three months ago, when this all started, you were a buck sergeant in the Army, only one year out of Ranger school. You had been stationed at a Nation Guard base out in Illinois to help train some of the guardsmen, one day you got a call to help evacuate part Chicago, they said it was a chemical spill, but there weren't any type of chemical plants in that part of the city, but they still made you wear protective gear anyways.
After your unit got set up, evacuation went smoothly....at least for the first six hours, then panic suddenly erupted and thats when you saw the first ones. The first creature you saw had tackled someone and was about to attack them if two guardsmen hadn't dropped it first. At first glance you thought the creature was just some lion that had escaped from the zoo during all this confusion, but you noticed this animal had distinctive human features like, hands, and wore some articles of clothing, but was covered from head to toe in fur.
That's when you saw them all, hidden in the dark were multiple sets of glowing eyes, staring at you and then at their fallen comrade, then back at you. Suddenly a noise pulls your attention out of your thoughts.
