Chapter #3

If You Can't Stand the Heat

    by: Doom Author IconMail Icon
Of course, the toilets and the kitchen are pretty far apart in this restaurant. 'Pretty far' to a normal-scaled person translates as an 'incalculable distance' to quarter-inch tall you. You roll over in your head the many obstacles that could become apparent as you trek there.

The restaurant is open and doing business, and staff and customers will be walking about almost constantly - the risk of being trodden into the carpet is all too real!

As you finally reach the door of the toilets, a giant strides over you with earth-shaking power, an awesome reminder of your precise place in the world now. Each of his footsteps crashes deafeningly against the tiles, your insect-like patter inaudible in comparison.

You make the change from tile to carpet with a little trepidation; the fibres are thick and tall, and while they're closely packed enough that walking atop them is possible, there are worn areas where even your trim weight topples them.

It's slow going, and the distance is incredible. In the distance you can make out the heaven-piercing forms of tables and chairs, and skies rumbling with the conversation of seated, hungry gods. In the interests of safety, you hug the skirting board, well clear of any idle feet.

You inch along, every step a triumph as you hum to yourself, freezing each time a shoe slams down beside you. You even recognise the giant that passed you in the toilets, already done with his business and you no more than a foot or two closer to the kitchens!

Still, your belly is full, so there's no rush to get to your destination. You have the luxury of being able to take regular rests across your trek, and know that the place will still be there once this restaurant closes up for the night.

In fact, you're no more than halfway across the floor by the time the last customers depart, a young couple arm in gigantic arm complimenting the staff as they stride out of the building.

Now comes a time you had feared - the potential clean-up after hours, where a staff member may well vacuum you up as they go about their job!
