Just a small stockpile, you tell yourself. That's all you need. A startup to see you through the rough first few days. You descend to the kitchen, and begin rummaging through the cupboards.
Any food in the refrigerator will be useless, so you load up on the stuff full of preservatives, all the snack foods and tinned goods. You don't neglect stealing a can-opener as well, and almost clear out the Andersons' food stocks.
A twinge of guilt, but you shake it off. You pull out the shrinking machine, using it to reduce the food to your future scale. You can carry it all in the palm of your hand, take it upstairs and reduce yourself to the same scale later.
Then there's a rattle at the door - someone is coming home and will soon enter! There might be enough time for you to run away, but they'll surely hear you. Unless you were to use the shrinking machine? You panic, but try to think quickly!
