Slowly, you creep your way inside. The shuffling of the dirt on your stomach as you crawl through fills you with anxiety despite the fact that if something were in here, they would have heard your digging moments ago. Nothing pounces at you. Your flesh remains intact. You feel no leg pin you down as your back is chewed up and you die. Nothing happens. Only darkness greets you in this place.
Still with your guard up, you reach into your pack and flick on your flash light. There really is nothing in here. The place was truly hollow inside.
"I've got quite the good luck streak going on lately.", you say smiling.
The interior of this garden decoration was more than spacious enough for your needs. You began mapping out what would go where and how you would fortify the place. Something would need to be done about the light issue too. Maybe punching a hole into that fake window would be enough. It was carved so its surface would be thinner than everywhere else . . . same goes for the door. The sill would keep the rain out and installing some makeshift shutters would be useful.
A firepit would need to be dug out in the ground somewhere, and with that there would also have to be ventilation. You would need to devise a way up to the upper areas so you could put in a chimney for the smoke. Perhaps a pulley system for now? Ah! But the smoke! Too much of it and Ashley would for sure come to check it out!
These thoughts rushed through your head like a frenzy. Why couldn't you have thought of this earlier instead of overwhelming yourself now? You needed rest. It had been eight hours since you first began and six of them were spent crossing the yard. A break would be just what you need to clear the mind.
You rub your temples in soothing circular motions. It was to be expected of your first day in this new life. It would just take some getting used to. You prepared for this. Don't let a little anxiety crumble all the work you put into mentally readying yourself. With a calm sigh, you holster your machete, turn off your flashlight and drop your pack next to you before leaning up against the wall and sitting down.
It was warm in here, but not humid. A surprise to be sure, considering the heat wave the town was experiencing, but a welcome one.
