Fortune Teller

Mackenzie walked eagerly but carefully in her state of light dress. The wait was short.

"Salutations," a young woman said to her. She was dressed informally, sat at a table in the center, and had a pretty face. Not as pretty as mine Mackenzie mused, though her thoughts were primarily on the room.

It was a small, spartan area. It had a padded chair that the woman gestured for Mackenzie to sit on. Mackenzie obliged, but looked bemused.

The young woman smiled. "You were expecting a crone in Roma garb. Maybe a crystal ball nearby, the smell of frankincense, even cat as a familiar."

Mackenzie simply nodded before the young woman continued. "Furniture. Divination does not need such dressing. The reading is either authentic or not. Now, you wish to know about today."

Mackenzie nodded again; the young woman shuffled coolly. "Today's past, present, and future." The young woman drew. "First is the Papess. Often meaning scholarship but it seems reversed here. You had a lack of foresight that leaves you ill-suited this day."

Mackenzie briefly opened her mouth before closing it. Well, yeah. I don't have underwear on, but that could have applied to so many things. Next she'll probably bring up how I currently doubt her.

She drew again. "Second is the Hanged Man. You have to adapt suddenly to starkly different situation."

See. That is so broad. Just like I thought.

She drew a final time. "Third is the Tower. Ill fortune will make this cycle hard to bear. That is all."

Mackenzie frowned. "What do you mean, ill fortune and that is all? I could have just looked at the horoscope."

The young woman gave a cool look back. "Accept your fate or don't. It will be revealed."

Mackenzie left slightly annoyed. She walked into the breezy walkway and pushed the reading from her mind.

Maybe the devil's wheel, bumper cars, or hall of mirrors.
