I always found my plantation to be the best spot for research; so distant, discrete, and overall relaxing. The company also found it appealing; not eye-catching. Standing on the porch, I sighed as I looked at the golden fields across the road and the strip of forest bordering the horizon beneath the rich blue sky. Not a single house or shop for miles.
Walking back into the house, I skipped down the stairs leading into the basement, which also happened to be my office. Working in the research facility actually didn't leave me with some elaborate laboratory in my house, just a desk and a computer.
However, a metal briefcase laid on my desk, its sleek appearance contrary to the homely basement.
I sat myself down and looked at the case with anticipation, eventually reaching into a drawer and pulling out a tape recorder.
"Recording Number 1, June 13, 200X. Project is Barry-8, an additive supplement for commercial retail. Desired outcome is a healthy, non-lethal desire for the subjected food. Test has been successful on 8 lab rats, and human test is about to go underway. Test subject is Hank Forrest, Age 30, Height 6'1", Weight 176 lb. Test has not commenced. About to treat a meal with Barry-8 and monitor results. End tape."
Clicking it off, I sighed as I looked at the brief case. I couldn't believe I was the one they'd chosen. You'd think they'd get some guy in contract, but no.
Alas, there's always gotta be a test subject, I suppose.
Reaching into the mini fridge, I pulled out a plate wrapped in cellophane. Peeling it revealed a slice of cake on a paper plate.
With a gulp, I flicked open the briefcase and revealed two vials, each filled with clear liquid. After uncorking one, I brought it under my nose and gave a small whiff. It had no noticeable smell.
Hovering the open tube over the vial, I let some of the liquid trickle onto the cake. It seeped into the sponge cake, acting exactly as water would. Once it'd set in, I sliced off a bite with my fork.
"Well, down the hatch…" I announced as I brought the fork into my mouth.
