Astrid was out with Stormfly, early as the Sun was just peeking over the horizon. She'd done her jobs for the day, and the skies were clear and fresh.
She loved Stormfly, more than she could say, more than she'd admit. But she wasn't a nightfury. So she took as much time to work on her skills and knowledge as she could.
They bobbed and weaved between the trees, as deftly as others. Her tail lashing out barbs, each one hitting the target. Astrid was overjoyed, in a flash the forest vanished, and the pair shot out of the trees. Behind them the cliff receded, and beneath them the waves crashed.
To cool down, she guided Stormfly at a leisurely pace between the sea stacks, as she edged her Deadly Nadder back along the coast towards the village.
Abruptly, she dug her heels in. As much as you can with dragon hide. There was something down on the beach... something weird. It caught the light oddly, shifting and sparkling like a jewel, but more colourful, and brighter.
