Chapter #3A cloaking device. by: imphic "Good morning, Richards, Carver. Anything recorded over the weekend on Mortimer, Bianca, and Gadget?" Kim asked as she put her things in her locker.
"Hi Kim. You're looking well, by the way. It seems to have remained effective throughout the duration. Both Mortimer and Bianca were imperceptible between 400 and 700 nm wavelengths, a.k.a. not on the visible light spectra. Both perceptible on infrared and ultraviolet rays. Our control, Gadget, remained perceptible on IR, Visible, and UV light spectra," Richards reported. He reran through the archive footage to confirm the report.
Kim allowed herself a smile. She had finished washing her hands and was putting on a fresh lab coat. "Carver, any response noted on the mice themselves?"
Carver shook his head. "M, B, and G all maintained normal vitals and activity levels. Importantly, G would sometimes bump into M or B, but M and B did not bump into G. M and B, in addition to normal behavior, did not bump into each other, indicative of the Gyges device allows for other users to perceive them."
Kim brought a hand to her mouth to stifle an expletive. "Really!"
Carver nodded and was starting to be infected with a grin too. "I'll verify the video with the time signals, but almost certainly yes. We might have lucked into the proper calibration!"
Kim couldn't restrain a small hop from giddiness. She blushed, though her colleagues could relate. "Of course we'll need to replicate in full scale trials, but we're so close to getting Tech and Innovation Awards showered on us!"
Kim dashed to her console and scanned the data. "Yes. Gyges functioned in full capacity for the... huh?"
Kim stared at a variable for awhile as Carver and Richards turned to her. "What is it Kim?" Carver asked while Richards moved to see for himself.
"The penetration range reads as low. Very low. Maybe it was altered while miniaturizing the device for trials on living organisms?" Kim rubbed her chin and looked at her teammates. "But video archive confirms their bodies were fully invisible, right?"
Carver nodded firmly and Richards led her to his monitor. "Yeah, no mouse skeleton or organs or even a shadow," Richards affirmed while playing the footage back.
Carver moved over to the mice's sizable cage. "Still invisible now. Really, it might be a plus. If Gyges works with low penetration, it might mean longer term exposure has less side effects."
Kim nodded. "I'll note it, but let's get ready for the full scale human trials."
Richards grimaced. "About that--the primary volunteer called in sick and the alternative hasn't responded."
Kim sighed. "Patience and boldness, gentlemen. Technological progress requires both and we've already contributed the first part. I'm going to be the first human subject for Gyges."
Carver raised his eyebrows and Richards kept his frown. After a moment of thought, Richards cleared his throat. "Kim, I understand your passion. But isn't it unwise for the project lead to be a test subject? How can you objectively report on yourself?"
Kim shook her head. "There's a lot of cases of scientists experimenting on themselves: Salk, Hoffman, Newton. Besides, you two will observe me."
Richards looked to Carver who shrugged and looked at Kim. "I've yet to persuade you out of any course of action once your committed. Still, Richards is right. We'll need to temporarily replace you as an official observer."
Kim nodded in concession and thought a bit. "Okay, here's a solution." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
