October 31st, a day of scares, sweets, and silly outfits. Outside, the night was dark and clear, the moon shining brightly down onto the streets below. People went from door to door, house to house, filling their bags and containers with various bits of candy. From goblins to princesses, witches and ghosts to cowboys and superheroes, they were all enjoying the frightening festival to the fullest.

In one house, sitting at the far end of a cul-de-sac, Jason Crane sat watching some low-budget horror movie. With all the lights on, a bowl of popcorn in his lap, and his phone in his hands. He'd hoped to just enjoy a night alone, but his friends had hoped for something else, going by the texts they had been sending him.

u sure you wont come? He read on the screen.

Yeah. Stop asking, he texted back.

just one year wont kill you

still not going

if ur worried about that while skeleton thing noone even remembers that

And it was then that, Jason turned his cellphone off. If Amanda had hoped to get him out on Halloween, reminding him of the reason he was still inside, and had in fact spent the past few years spending Halloween inside, was not the way to do it. He'd been 13, the last time he'd gone out on Halloween. A little old for trick or treating, maybe, but not too old that he was looked down upon. Of course, one family had taken their dog out with them for the night, and this dog really, really loved bones. So, it was understandable that he'd get a little excited once he saw Jason. Ultimately, it wouldn't have been so bad, if they been walking by a house party. Between the flimsy fabric, the canine's sharp canines, and the riled up, raucous laughter of the onlooking party goers, any find memories of Halloween Jason had were eclipsed by a the complete embarrassment of being stripped in front of a crowd. So, no, he didn't like to go out on Halloween any more.

Of course, he'd only told that story to a select few people. Most people had forgotten, but Jason never could. His friends had been disappointed, though understanding, but it seemed like they were at their limit; being seniors and 18 years old now meant they'd probably being going separate ways for college, and they wanted to enjoy at least one Halloween with him. But still he refused. He felt bad, but he was content to celebrate in his own way. Alone. Fully dressed and in normal, hard to tear clothing.

He leaned back with a sigh, sinking into the cushions of the couch. The movie he was watching was pretty bad, actually, but he was fine to keep on watching it, when...
