You did it! You shrunk! Accidentally, sure, and it's not the best time for it, but it's real. It worked! You're in one piece, and compared to the giant matter transposer beside you, you're about twelve inches tall. But someone opened the door. Someone was coming in. And now that you're not much of an obstacle, they're bound to swing open the door any second now.
You act hurriedly to correct your clumsy mistake. Throwing yourself awkwardly on the L-shaped machine, you struggle to twist the dial, but can barely turn it a single click. You can do it and reverse your shrinking, but you need more time. The door is opening again. You retreat from the dial and throw your weight against the barrel, determined to push it out of sight before the intruder enters upon you. It rocks and scratches against the floor, but you can hardly budge it from its heavily anchored spot in plain sight before the doorway. The door closes, and you look over your shoulder.
