Tommy worried about his friend. The medallion came into their lives and they never looked beyond their simplistic pleasures. They never thought about the consequences of using a magical artifact that they didn’t understand. Tommy meant to remedy that. His attempt to enlist Joe’s aid in research met with a mumbled no. Brad and Mark might never of stepped into a library so that meant it was up to him to put in some research time. Taking pictures of the shapeshifting medallion before heading out.
After arriving at the library he met a woman name tagged as Marissa at the front desk and asked, “I am looking for books on the occult and folklore.”
The cute coed lowered her glasses,”Oh. We don’t get many requests for those. May I ask what you are trying to find so that I might help you narrow your search.”
Tommy thought she looked trustworthy and he certainly needed help. Pulling out his phone, “This is what I am looking for information on. It is a medallion that me and my friends found.” He decided to stay cagey for the moment. Who would believe him about a magic medallion.
Marissa’s eyebrow curled up in curiosity. “How about I help you? I think I know a few books that could prove helpful.”
“I would be grateful.” Tommy found himself lead away from the traditional books on science, law, and business into a back part of the library. Then beyond that into the basement. He half expected cobwebs and torches. Marissa unlocked a side room cloaked in darkness. His mystical fantasies dispelled when she flicked on a light switch. Not even a flickering bulb. He felt relieved not finding himself in a horror movie. Directing him to put on gloves as Marissa put on a pair herself.
“Some of the books and documents here are precious and we want to avoid getting any oil from our fingers on them.” Marissa perused the shelves before dropping one in front of Tommy. “This one is on talismans, medallions and other charms. It often has images to accompany the descriptions. It is a good place for you to start. I will see what I can find.” The books title unearthed arcana a study on the mystical items of lore volume one: amulets and related artifacts.
“Thank you for your help.” Tommy said as he began looking through the book.
“No problem. I love a research challenge and this beats explaining the alphabet to college students so they can find their latest fiction book.”
Tommy found a section in the book on transmutational items. Looking through cursed items listed in that section in particular he got caught up in reading. The talisman of infantasm created by a powerful shaman to provide youth to the user but the story said it became cursed when the purchaser stole it away without paying. The man who used it felt the years melt away leaving him an infant. Another talked of a wrathful woman with an unfaithful lover. She crafted a necklace soaked in the essence of dog. Tommy decided not to dwell on what the essence of a dog might be. But when given to her lover he lost his humanity with each betrayal of his mistress till only a loyal dog remained.
While fascinated he forced his search on. He found a medallion similar to the shapeshifting medallion but it offered only information on its transformation abilities it offered its wearer. But Tommy found another item of interest. The ring of true self. The description said that it would make any who wore it under the rays of the sun would become their true self. Imbued by a god of the sun who had the power to see through any deception. If he found it then any of them could be restored if the shapeshifting medallion stopped working.
