Abby passes out

    by: cana Author IconMail Icon
The twins played about under the droopy eyes of Abby. Sitting in a shady area she picked with a refreshing wind soothing her as her parents frolicked about. The peaceful atmosphere proved too great for her exhaustion. Her eyelids shut and she couldn’t find the strength to lift them open. Slumber caught her and held her tightly. Joanne and Jeff soon realized the slumbering state of their daughter. Conspiring with each other they whispered, “What should we do?” Asked Joanne.

“Let’s sneak off and worry her. She should know better than to leave children unattended.” Jeff smiled as he led his spouse away holding her tiny hand as they ran off. Joanne stifled her gigging till out of earshot of their daughter. “Want to hit up the Cupcake factory on the corner?”

The heightened sweet tooth Jeff felt since his transformation drove him to seek out the satiation of that desire. Joanne enjoyed delving into naughtiness and eagerly followed her fellow conspirator. Out of the zoo they traveled after a brief stop to pick up some cash and at the gift shop a couple of cute animal purses. Shaped like panda heads their matching purses with straps attached to each ear. Spotting their destination a short distance off they ran across the street heedless of the danger. Screeching tires accompanied by a blaring horn warned them too late of the peril besetting them. The car struck them knocking them over and out.

Jeff woke to the beeping noise of a monitor at his bedside. Searching the warmly colored room he saw beautiful bouquets of flowers and stuffed animals set out of the way except one that lay next to him. His head throbbed in pain and his arm in a cast but he seemed generally okay. He started to panic not seeing Joanne. As he reached for the call nurse button the bathroom door opened. A gorgeous red head walked out with only her puffy red eyes detracting from her look. Upon seeing the young girl awake she rushed to Jeff’s side say, “It’s okay baby don’t be afraid. I know that you might not recognize me but I am your mommy. Your name is Haylee and you were in an accident but everything will be alright soon. I am going to take you and your sister home with me and we are going to have lots of fun. I am going to read you stories and tuck you in every night.”

Jeff struggled to process this development. Is Joanne or one of the kids trying to play a trick on me? He decided to at least ask about Joanne, “Is my sister okay?”

“Of course honey. Kaylee is in the next room. You will be able to see her soon. I am sorry but did your daddy change your names? You must be so confused. Your daddy took you from me when you were little. Did he tell you about me?” The woman watched his features trying to imprint them deeply in her psyche.

“I want to talk to my sister.” Jeff eyed the woman who appeared to be genuine or a fantastic actress.

“Of course. Do you know how to use the phone?” Jeff nodded and the lady wrote down the number to what he assumed to be Joanne’s room. “I will only be gone five minutes to tell the doctor that you are awake.” She leaned in kissing Jeff’s forehead before leaving him. Jeff caught her tearing up as she left.

With the shutting of the door Jeff seized up the phone punching in the numbers with his stubby fingers. A little girl voice answered the other end, “Hello?”

“Joanne is that you?” Jeff questioned.

“Yes.” Came Joanne’s short response.

“Care to fill me in on what is going on?” Jeff asked baffled and hungry for answers.

“Don’t get mad but this might be kind of my fault. I saw a mystery show about twin girls abducted as baby’s allegedly by their father. Well, they did an age enhancement to our current age and that is what I based our transformation on. When we got brought in to the hospital they used our fingerprints to try to identify us. They matched the prints that were taken from the twins as children. I became one when I transformed and you must of thought of being my twin as you shifted so you were.” Joanne’s explanation helped clarify what was happening but not how to get out of here.

The throbbing increased in his head. Jeff in a moment of clarity came up with a plan, “We just need to call the kids and have them get over here.”

“And what are their numbers? Since we auto dial with our cell phones I don’t know their numbers. It was your idea to get rid of the house phone that I knew.” Joanne responded.

“We weren’t using it and not important right now. I shoot I don’t know their numbers either. Crap!” Jeff shouted to himself.

“Haylee don’t use such language.” The red headed woman returned shocked at her child’s use of a bad word. “I am sure you know better than that.”

“Sorry I just got upset.” Jeff covered for his exclamation. Saying a quick goodbye to ‘Kaylee’ aka Joanne before returning to the present conversation. “How long are we going to be stuck here?”

“You are going to be here only another day for observation. Then you will go home with me. I know this is a lot to take in but you will be happy. There is a social worker who wishes to speak with you do you feel up for it.” His ‘mom’ said waiting for Jeff’s okay. Jeff nodded so she summoned in a plump older woman and a younger woman with a stern look. His ‘mom’ told Jeff she’d be with Kaylee.

Gently and comfortingly the heavy set woman sat at Jeff’s bed and spoke, “I am Margaret Sawyer. I want to reassure you Haylee that woman is your mother. They took some of your blood and made sure. Now, what we would like to know is where you have been and who has been taking care of you? This here is Antonia Moretti she is a police detective who would also like to know.”

“I don’t remember anything.” Jeff didn’t know how else to answer.
