He ran after the shadowy figure of his mother which receded as soon as he raised his hand for it. The more he tried to follow it, the more the shadow receded. Steven let out a cry of agony as his another attempt at touching mothers fingers failed.
"I will be a good son this time, Mamma. Please come back," he managed to say before he choked again.
"Come son," said the shadowy figure, outstretching her hands."Come hug me," the figure said, standing at the edge of darkness. Steven couldn't see it from where he stood but beyond the point where the shadow stood, was a pit which was as deep as a lake, no water, but a reservoir of bubbling lava. Shadow didn't move back any further; waiting for Steven to come near it so that it could hug it, suck the soul out of it and take a form of its own.
"Sorry Mamma. Sorry for all what I did to you," said Steven moving within arm's length to the shadow and the cliff.
"No," scream of Laura echoed through the maze. The shadow snapped its head to look into the direction of the voice but Steven didn't.

"Where am I?" he wondered for a brief while. The shadow had disappeared as if it were never there and what remained in its place was a vague recollection of it in Steven's mind. He might have stoked those memories again if it were not for another shrill cry from Laura who was fighting against her own demons - his fear of losing Steven to another woman.
"Laura! Get away from there" yelled Steven, who was coming to his senses now. He yelled again to warn Laura against moving another step because from where he stood, he could see that she too was standing on the edge of the pit which lead to the pit of the bubbling lava.
Steven ran towards Laura who was standing some thirty feet away from her.
"For God sake stop Laura," he shrieked yet again when he saw Laura raising her right feet forward, possibly trying to strangle the shadow she was fighting with.
"I will kill her, Steven," she answered back, "I will kill this bitch now."
Steven was still some five feet away when Laura lost her balance and ...
