Chapter #5

Keep Going as we were, but don't run

“There's no need for us to run Laura, that's silly!"

“Well, I wasn't the first one to run you know, I ran to keep up with you, Mr. Scaredy Pants!"

“Laura, we can’t fight. Remaining a team is our only hope I think. I know I made a mistake by dragging us in here, but we’re here, so let’s make the best of it.

“I know Stephen, I’m sorry. C’mon, let’s high tail it out of here though, that light is getting closer.”

The two of them hurried down the path, walking briskly, but no longer running. Stephen kept looking back over his shoulder at the light, and saw that it was not gaining on them. Still, he felt the need to rush, the need to find safety. He found himself wondering what would happen if the light was confronted by another light. He looked at Laura and said, “Look for a good sized stick with a bit of moss on the end. We’re going to make a torch of our own. We’ll see if that helps keep that light behind us distant.”

Laura looked at Stephen incredulously for a moment before replying, “What makes you think a torch will scare away something like that?”

“Nothing really. But we don’t know what it is, the worst that can happen is that it won’t go away.”

“I’m not so sure, but I’m willing to try anything right now, I’m getting tired.”

That statement was true, Stephen could see just the beginnings of labored breathing on her part. Suddenly Laura stopped and bent down, grabbing a long stick. “Will this do?”

She held up a rather large tree limb that had fallen to the ground. The end was covered with what looked to be Spanish Moss. “Great!”, Stephen said, “Now let’s see if we can light it on fire.”

Reaching into his pocket he pulled out his lighter. Striking it with his thumb, he quickly lit the moss on fire. Looking back along the path, he saw the trailing light pause momentarily, only to rush towards them!

“Laura, run! Our flame had the opposite effect!”
