Sabrina makes friends with the wolf

by: Dragon is hiding Author IconMail Icon
Reaching the edge of the woods, Sabrina's ankle was killing her. She sat down on a nearby log and untied the boot. Taking off the many layers of socks, she packed some snow into her hand, and pressed it against her foot. "Ahh." a sigh escaped her lips. The coldness of the snow felt good against the throbbing heat her injury was emanating.
A shadow appeared at the entrance, less than ten feet away from where she was sitting. Green eyes glowed, and Sabrina sat stark still when she saw the shadow. A low growl came. "Hey there." She whispered. Smiling at the shadow, she extended her hand forward, slowly. "I'm not here to hurt you. Look! I'm hurt myself." Her ankle had begun swelling, and she muttered some expletives to herself.
A figure slowly came out, dark and looking defensive.
Sabrina stayed on the log. Rummaging in her bag, she found a piece of stale bread, and broke off a large part of it for the newcomer.
Holding the bread in her outstretched hand, she watched as the figure, now fully emerged, slowly advanced towards her. It was the wolf.
It growled again, but she didn't flinch. Stopping a foot away from Sabrina's trembling hand, the wolf dipped its head, as if to tell Sabrina, "drop the bread."
"You want me to put the bread on the ground?"
The wolf dipped its head again, as if nodding.
Sabrina did as she was told.
The wolf snapped up the bread in one bite, munching and crunching on the stale slice. Satisfied that it was not poisoned or compromised, the wolf crept slowly up to Sabrina, close enough so she could touch him, but far enough so she knew he was not planning to hurt her.
"May I touch you?" she whispered, her breath coming out in puffs.
As if in agreement, the wolf raised its head, so its fur touched Sabrina's outstretched hand.
The girl gasped in amazement, slowly bringing her hand down to touch the wolf's head. Sliding her hand down the front of his face, she stopped at his nose. "May I name you?" She asked softly.
The wolf got up and stepped closer to Sabrina. He sat down and began licking Sabrina's swollen foot.
"Hey, that tickles! Okay, boy, I'm going to name you." Thinking for a moment, she proclaimed, "Rendalf. You are my wolf protector, wolf shield, so you will have a protective name." Looking down at her foot, she noticed the swelling had noticeably subsided.
Rendalf kept licking Sabrina's foot, and Sabrina stroked his head lovingly.
"I don't understand why people don't like you, Rendalf. I think we're all just misunderstood. People want to kill you because they think you want to kill them. But in reality, you just kill them because they want to kill you!" She exclaimed. "It's just an endless cycle of death, bloodshed, and violence." Her voice dropped down to a whisper. "All because of a simple misunderstanding."
Rendalf whimpered, finding Sabrina's discarded footwear and dragging it back towards her foot, as if signalling for her to put it back on.
She hadn't noticed, but the wolf had long stopped licking, and her foot's size was back to normal.
Raising his head to nestle against Sabrina's stomach to get her attention, Rendalf nosed his new female companion.
"Aww, you're not violent. Not at all." Sabrina hugged his head. "You're actually a very sweet wolf. So protective of me." She reached down and arduously began putting back on her socks and shoe."I wish Father understood that."
Rendalf's ears suddenly pricked up, as if sensing danger. He bounded away from Sabrina's embrace and growled at something Sabrina couldn't see. He followed the path Sabrina had taken from her place, and continued growling and barking at some invisible aggravator.
Sabrina couldn't help but wonder why Rendalf was suddenly so defensive. Who or what was out there?
