Sabrina finds herself in a bad situation

Sabrina tried to ignore the pain in her foot, so she began to sing. It was an old song her grandmother had taught her when she was very little.

Climb high
Creep low
Watch for shadows
wherever you go

Keep watch
Follow the light
Never, ever,
go out at night.

She glanced up at the cloudy sky, not sure where the sun was, and hoping it would not get dark soon. Sabrina's grandmother had warned her many times about the dark. And it had worked because Sabrina was afraid of the night, especially after she and her dog Bo had gone into the woods years ago.

Thank the stars, her fairy mother Celine had protected her dog from being pounced upon and shredded up for stew. But now her mother was dead. The wolf had killed her, so she heard. How does one kill a fairy? Besides, there was no proof. But Sabrina was determined to find out for herself.

She wished Bo was still alive. He'd been an old dog when she was little and died shortly after the incident in the woods. Her father promised she could have another dog, but he never followed through. She loved animals so much. And she still thought about the wolf in the woods and wondered if he could be tamed. Perhaps he'd been cursed by an evil witch and there was an antidote to remedy it.

Sabrina's father said she would never amount to anything because she was too kind and giving and always found the good in people and animals. He had told her the world was full of evil people who would just take advantage of her. But though she tried (and not for long,) she could not change who she was.

The woods loomed before her, uninviting and dangerous.

Follow the light
Never, ever,
go out at night.

The first thing she did when she entered the dark forest, was find a sturdy stick to help her walk. Her foot was throbbing with pain, worse than before. So she kept on singing.

How far did she dare walk? It wasn't getting any easier and it surely was not getting any lighter.

A twig snapped behind her. She turned and forced a smile at the growling wolf.
