The maze of regret sucks the soul out of Steven

"No, this can't be, you died. . . ." Steven's knees faltered and wobbled as he dropped on the ground, his body supported by his knees. He couldn't believe it. How come his mother was here? It was not possible, there was no logic. She was dead, long ago, when he was six years old. It must be a trick. No matter how much Steven wanted to believe this was some kind of game, he couldn't come to it, it was real.

From the shadows, he saw a figure emerging, a woman with a burnt face, her brown hair spread across her shoulders, those hollow eyes, he couldn't believe it, he didn't want to believe it. She wore the same clothes she did at the time of her death, a light pink maxi skirt with brown sandals and a kitchen apron which had mud smeared on it, it was his mother.

"And it was because of you, Steven, you forced me to do it. It was you. . . " She pointed at him, taking a step closer to him each time as he took a step back, shaking his head slowly, not believing the sight before him. He felt nauseous. He wanted to throw up. He was furious, he was sad, he was broken, he wanted to die, he wanted to scream at her, he wanted to hug her, there were so many things he wanted to do but he continued to move back as she came closer. Something about her was creepy but he couldn't put a finger on it.

"No, you are my mother! MOTHER! You cannot blame your own child, for god's sake!" For a long time he thought it was his fault but no, it was not, his mother had said those words before she died, 'It isn't your fault Steven, you are a child." and after reminding himself of this, he forgave himself after a few years but it was all coming back to him, the guilt, the pain, the crime he had done, he had killed her. "NO!" His mind screamed back at his own thought.

"I am blaming the person responsible for my death! I am not blaming my son, I have no son. My son died the day he killed me." A tear fell from her hollow eye as she continued to proceed. Her voice was shrilling and ear-piercing. What she said broke Steven's heart as he stopped and moved his hands in front of him, pleading.

"No, no, - mama, please don't do this, you said it wasn't my fault, I AM your son, please. . ."

"No, I said it so that you could live but it is time you realised your mistake, you need to suffer, you need to feel what I felt. And you will do now."

He didn't know what happened. He was engulfed in flames as the same scenery replaced the one of the labyrinth's around him, he was in their old kitchen where the fire spread and consumed his mother. Only this time, it was the fire consuming him as his mother watched him burn.

He couldn't move, he wanted to scream to the top of his lungs but he couldn't, he felt tied even though there were no chains, he felt trapped whereas there were no cages.

His mother crept closer to him and then sat on her knees taking his face in her bony hands, "My child, I knew you would accept your punishment and your fate, do you feel the pain I did? His mind screamed out as the pain drove through his back and everywhere in his body. Every thought he just had became confused as the burning pain licked up his back like scorching fire. His throat gurgled as he struggled to breathe, spitting blood. His body was shaking he was sweating. Slowly breathing hard he dragged himself into a sitting position, but he couldn't escape the flames no matter what. He heard the word "burn" echo everywhere as he surrendered to the darkness, his soul departing from the world.
