Reesa stood frozen for the moment. Her previous actions marched through her memory like Barack the Conqueror of old. No one could stop him. How was she to change fate? She was sure the King was dead when she slipped out of the castle. "Who had claimed Tryl to be the chosen? Who set this untrained boy to be king?"
Joshua began to squirm and fuss. She hummed a melody to quiet him and laid him in his bed.
Soft tapping at the door interrupted her thoughts and she stood to one side. "Who is it?"
"Tanya."
Reesa sighed and lifted the latch. The door flew open and the young girl flew into the room falling on the rough floor, tears streamed down her dirty face.
Two giant entered and slammed the door behind them.
"What were you doing at the castle yesterday?" One of the Kings Guards demanded.
"Castle? I was not at the castle yesterday. My son is ill and I need to keep him away from others as he is contagious."
"Whats wrong with him?" The smaller guard asked, moving closer to the door.
"Ignore her. I have a passel of children and they're always sick with something. Don't lie. My sources say you were in the castle near the time the King became ill and died."
"I wasn't there. You must have seen someone else. I had no reason to go the castle. The King has not called for me for over a month. I fear he had found some reason to be angry with me, but I have done nothing."
The younger man tried to reach the handle of the door blocked by his superior. "You are a liar!" The last words were followed by the man's backhand slap. Reese wasn't expecting this and caught off guard her head spun as she fell across Tanya's legs.
"Now you will tell me what poison you gave the king!"
"I tell you I wasn't there." Reesa's voice was muffled as she held her hand to her cheek.
The large guard jerked her to her feet. "You will come with me to the Captain of the Guard."
Reesa pulled against him. "Please believe me, I have been here with my sick child. I can't go with you. He'll be awake soon and want to feed."
"Let him go hungry for a little while. Its good for him. He won't be such a momma's boy." The guards laughed and pulled Reesa from the house.
"Tanya, get Getta, she will take Joshua."
The girl nodded.
The people stared at the two men marching a woman down the streets. When the women peeked out to see who it was there were some who laughed and others who just hid their face and turned away. No one stepped forward to help her.
At the castle, Reesa was thrust into the room where the Captain of the Guard held audience. He waved the men to leave them alone and fear began to slowly thicken her veins. She said nothing, but bowed her head so she could see where his feet took him.
"Welcome little Reesa. Since the King is dead, May he rest in peace, you are no longer under his care. In fact you are no longer needed around here. You did your job well. Not for our side, but we managed to make that mistake work for us."
She raised her head slightly and eyed him.
He saw her reaction. "Yes, sweetheart, we know what Asafan had you do. The king knew there was a plot also. He was so besotted with you he didn't care. I'm not so stupid. I can make things happen. I know Asafan visited you. What does he want?"
Reesa pressed her lips together and stared hard at the point where the Captain stood. His boots moved bringing the man so close her head touched his chest.
His gloved fist moved to her chest and up to her chin. His fist pushed against her
chin forcing it up and her gaze to meet his.
"You don't have a choice any more. You are now mine. I'm in charge now and you will do what I say. From now on I want to hear every word of every meeting you have with Asafan and Frago. I will feed you the information you are to give them. Do you understand?" His voice softened and his breath caressed her cheek. "Do I hear a yes, sir?" Fingers pinched her chin but she wouldn't open her mouth to speak.
"You want to play hard to get?" His free hand gripped her breast and she groaned aloud in pain, her mouth opening and his smashing hers filling it with his tongue.
She stumbled into her home immediately looking for Joshua. His crying brought her milk down and she held the globes searching for relief.
Gretta slipped through the hidden door and laid the boy against his mother. "He wouldn't take from me. Are you alright?"
Ressa shook her head.
"Someone is waiting to see you."
