Stamping out the fire, Stephen ran after Laura, barely making her out in the dusky light ahead. When he finally caught up, he didn't pause but led the way deeper into the dark forest. "Why was everything so quiet?" He thought out loud. All he could hear was Laura's labored breathing behind him.
Laura ran as fast as she could without stumbling over any roots or branches lying in the way. She felt her adrenalin kick, giving her the strength to keep going towards whatever safety was out there. That mysterious light didn't feel friendly and all she could think about, 'Was it bearing down on us right now?' She felt so much better that Stephen was leading the way. "Thank goodness, I'm not alone!" She thought. They were in this together.
When it seemed as if the forest was thinning out, and not as dark as before, they stopped running. They began walking until no trees surrounded them. Looking around, feeling safe to light the torch, Stephen held his lighter up to the torch. Catching fire, he looked around on where they ended up. He could see that the path led up to a road ahead, but he didn't recognize which road it was or the way to go from here. Shrugging his shoulder, Stephen picked going right and hoped for the best.
"Do you think that was a dragon that was coming towards us back there?" Laura asked.
"No, it was a steady light. Most likely someone that would do us harm. I had a bad vibe about it."
"So did I! With both of us feeling it was danger, I'm glad we ran instead of waited to find out who it was."
A horrific sound could be heard in the direction they were going. It sounded as if an animal was screaming in agony or could it be human? They stopped and looked at each other. "What was that?" Laura whispered.
