Chapter #5
They reach a strange town.
by: Unknown
Before dusk could settle, the caravan was to reach a small settlement in the area by the name of Shepards Creek. Autumn trees slowly gave way to tall shoots of grain as the wilds transitioned to civilization. The trail curved and dipped downward, following the contours of the hill, which overlooked the small village. The men and women toiled in the fields to seemingly no end. Their mud-stained faces looked up from their labor to watch the convoy as it passed. It was not uncommon to witness troops pass through town, but ones with gleaming silver armor adorned with Elven insignia was truly a sight to behold.
A dozen soldiers on horseback lead the carriage, and another six tailed behind. Townsfolk looked up with the same glint of wonder as the farm workers as the carriage stopped in front of a small tavern. A well dressed elf, tall and slim stepped down from the driver’s seat and knocked on the door.
The door swung open revealing a portly man who’s neck craned back to look at the elf.
The elf began “Are you the proprietor of this establishment?” The nasally pinch of his voice held a stain of arrogant grace.
“That’d be me.” The man’s voice was deep and dormant.
“You must then know you are required to house our company for the night, with permissions granted by your nobility.” The elf drew a scroll from his robe filled with legal jargon. A wax seal on the bottom bore the crest of house Thorn, the family of nobles in charge of the county.
The man spent a moment looking the paper over, grumbling to himself with a heavy sigh. “There’s stew in the back, still fresh. Give me a moment to prepare your beds.”

The tavern was flooded with raucous cheers and drunken laughter as the soldiers indulged in their desires. Giselle however, sat in the corner of the room by herself, refreshing herself on Bitemarsher history. It was not long until she grew bored of the dull intricacies the author must have found so important. Instead she sat back and observed.
She watched the flames of the fire pit flicker and dance. She saw the shadows it cast bound to and fro. But something caught her eye above all else.
