Sam Hasan had it all. He was thirty, single and rich. He owned 15 businesses mostly in property and shares. But his pride and joy was Excel-Lence Computing, an IT company that specialised in networking protocols and systems mapping. And though his company was running well, he had a problem. Dealing with the disorganised and severely incompetent Robert Smythe-Donovan. Robert was in charge of personnel, administration, marketing, finance and executive assistant duties for 7 of the 15 companies. And he was constantly making mistakes. He refused to take responsibility for anything and even had the gall to plead Sam to pay his bills on time and not make personnel changes without getting a contract signed first. Sam had founded and ran this company for 10 years and this was the 4th business manager who had failed in 4 years. It was time for a 5th.
Robert was at his desk as he usually was. Sam glared at him as he made his way to office. Robert greeted him warmly, but his smile faded when he saw his experession. "Get in here!" Robert hastened to obey, his 18 months in the job told him to move. He had been in since 5:30 as working 12 hr days were a must. His wife was expecting their 4th child, he had to do everything in his power to keep his family afloat.
"You wanted go to see me, Sam?" asked Robert. "Close...the...door!" Robert did as ordered. "I have given you chance after chance. You are too disorganised and you don't file. It's time for you to leave. You're fired!" Robert stared back at him, stunned. He had introduced job coding, reporting and soft copies of suppliers invoices. He had improved personnel recording, receivables and invoicing. He had helped new staff get setup and tried in vain to get suppliers processed faster. "Didn't you hear me? You're fired!" Robert nodded. "Thank you for this opportunity. Good luck for the future." "You will be staying until your successor is properly trained. You are forbidden to move on until then!" he declared. Robert said nothing in reply. "Now go prepare an ad for your successor, preferably a girl like the three before you!" Sam smiled as Robert trudged away. Finally, he would rid of that business manager forever.
Sam enjoyed the rest of the day in relative silence. He wished goodbye to everyone but Robert. He had no desire to waste manners on him. Sam relaxed in his bed, looking forward to tomorrow. He wouldn't have been so relaxed if he had seen the shadowy figure behind the window.
