This choice: Mark began experimenting with the remote. • Go Back...Chapter #6Mark began experimenting with the remote. by: adianjayz   "Pfft... why do I need to read the manual for a TV remote? Who do you think I am, a technologically-challenged old man?" Mark exclaimed, before tossing the manual aside. With remote in hand, Mark went off for a survey around the site.
Apparently, the contracting company would send some representatives today for a monthly check. That was why Mark came early to make sure everything is in order. Of course, Mark has held all of his personnel to high standards, so he didn't spot any issues as he made his rounds.
Near the end of his inspection, Mark took out the remote out of curiosity, knowing that he completed the check early. At first, the remote looked ordinary, with different labelled buttons laid out in a similar format as the universal remotes. Although upon closer inspection, Mark did notice unusual symbols such as two converging arrows or the 'thinking brain' icon, for a lack of better terms. He also saw some weird terms such as 'Mind' and 'Merge'. Perhaps it had extra smart features over other remotes on the market?
Still skeptical, Mark tested the button with a 'plus' sign and pointed the remote at a fence. After waiting several seconds for a response, Mark said, "As I expected, someone pulled a fast one on me. Why would someone have the time to... woah!"
During the dialogue, Mark saw a construction wall, from the direction he pointed the remote, crumbling down, bringing along some of the foundation crashing as well. Unfortunately, Mark was standing on ground supported by that foundation, which led him tumbling down into the nearby trench. Before he could recover, he was hit in the back of the head by a slab of concrete. As his vision faded, Mark thought he saw an dramatically oversized metal rod behind the collapsing wall.
When Mark regained consciousness, he realized that he was trapped between the collapsed trench and slabs of concrete above him. His limbs felt immobile as he feared that his joints may be broken. Mark tried yelling for help, but his vocal cords didn't seem to respond. Just when Mark was about to give up, he felt his right hand touching the remote. Surprisingly, his right hand and the remote remained relatively unscathed, probably due to the way the wall collapsed. Regardless, that and the brief opening through the slabs were his remaining hopes of contacting the outside world. Judging by the view outside, it seems that it was still early morning, so not much time might've passed since the wall collapse. At this point, Mark could only pray for someone to come along and detect the signal emitted from the remote (hopefully). Mark didn't know how much trust to put in that remote, one that he had deemed to be a prank, but it was his only option at this point.
His body ached as he felt his skin swell and boil. His eyes were starting to droop as his vision started to become hazy once more. Just when Mark thought it was over, he heard footsteps. Normally, Mark would not get too excited, but in this emergency, it was the sound of salvation.
Peering through the concrete, he saw...   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
