Denise asked with a strange expression and Michelle just looked at everyone with curiosity, wondering if this was common in her new workplace.
"Deal!" you quickly said, sensing in Denise's doubt an opportunity to get something she apparently envied "It'll be a great way to learn how to be a manager from you, boss"
"Ha, didn't expect you to be that eager" Kim teased, a bit surprised by how excited you were. But in your mind she was giving you a way better opportunity than just mentoring some silly girl
"It'll be a great opportunity for me to learn how to be a manager from the best! See Denise? thanks for taking care of the new girl while I train to be a manager" You bragged but she didn't take the bait, and in fact that rookie Michelle even snorted a bit.
"Sure, I guess we can see some things James.. With that everyone knows what to do right? Thanks for this Denise. See me in the office in 10 mins James" Kim instructed you and left after you confirmed with a nod.
"No problem Kim" Denise said and was.. smiling? why would she be smiling about losing such an opportunity to be stuck in a lame mentoring role?
"What's with the smile?" You insisted on winning today's battle
"What do you mean, assistant?" Denise teased
"That's just for the day, and I will work close to Kim so I can take over soon" you bragged, feeling Denise was a bit dumb today if you had to explain it to her.
Denise laughed which further irritated you, and even Michelle was giggling a bit for some reason
"You don't get it do you?"
"What?"
"You will be her assistant.. you aren't learning her job, you will just be fetching her coffee, handling the unimportant paperwork.. maybe bringing her the lunch or her clothes from the dry cleaner" Denise laughed again
"What? She wouldn't ask that of me, you're out of your mind" You shook your head, feeling confident this wasn't going to be the case. You don't go from offering a mentoring role to something like that in a flash, right?
"That's what assistants do, isn't that right Michelle" Denise winked at the new girl
"Hmm, I don't know everyone here but if you say so" Michelle shrugged with such a cute gesture you failed to get angry at her too "But Kim did say something interesting before you arrived"
"What?" Denise asked
"She was telling James how mentoring someone was a sure fire way to getting promoted so.. maybe you're right?" Michelle wondered, finding funny how invested you two were in the rivalry. She was still only meeting you both, but from her point of view you ditched her already so she saw fit siding with Denise for this one
"B-but, I will work with her! What better way to learn the role?" You defended your decision, although to be honest your belief was starting to shake a bit, from the fear of not only taking the bad decision, but gifting the good one to your rival on a silver platter to boot.
"No James, you will work for her" Denise teased before noticing that sounded wrong "I mean, you already do, but as an assistant you won't have the tasks for a sure fire promotion, but the ones she doesn't want to bother doing.. Have fun! Let's go Michelle" Denise laughed and Michelle shook her head, giving you a last cute smile before leaving with Denise.
"There's no way Kim does that to me, she will see. I made the right choice" you thought to yourself, but Denise's confidence was enough to make you doubt a bit and feel frustrated with yourself for accepting so quickly. What if she was right? You would now have to play catch up for that coveted manager position.
