Chapter #4

Hatching in a barn with his Brother

    by: Ctbro Author IconMail Icon
Nick felt an eagerness building inside of him. He clawed at the shell with his single a fore and hind claw, the sharp nails digging through the hard shell. He pushed with head. The cracks seemed to deepen. With one final push, seemingly in tandem with his brother, Nick's head burst from the shell.

Like a diver who had just arisen from the depths of the ocean, he took in a deep breathe of air. He shivered. Poking outside of the egg, the air was cool. His vision was blurred and took time to adjust. He felt his entire head and neck covered in some goop. An instinct seemed to take hold, and Nick began to lick away the goop around his mouth. It was surprisingly sweet.

He managed to stick his right foreclaw through the opening, and an unusual tug from his left helped pull his body further from the egg. As his vision cleared, he noticed a looming head to his left. He turned to see a dragon head. Nick felt his heart race, and his brain did not process the shock on the other dragon's face. Nick tried to drag himself away but felt a painful tug from where his left shoulder would have been. Nick stopped immediately when he and this other dragon hatchling both squealed.

He turned to face the other hatchling again. 'I'm so stupid...' Nick thought to himself. The other hatchling's neck connected to the same shoulders as his own. This was his twin brother, conjoined twin brother if they were human. He had been informed by the... Nick could not seem to remember. He just knew that they were inseparable. Hesitantly, Nick sniffed at his brother's head. Then then licked the goop that drenched around the other's neck and side. A moment later, he felt the slick tongue of his twin tickling his neck as the goop was drawn away.

'Good!' Nick thought to himself as they cleaned each other. 'We're getting along.' Awkwardly, they stumbled the rest of the way out of the egg. Nick realized that while they shared the common body, locomotion and sensation seemed split between them. It seemed almost like they were two dragons mashed together. Slowly, they turned and began to eat the shell that had protected and carried them. It appeared softer now, easy to chew.

As they finished this first meal, Nick became aware of something or someone watching them. Perhaps now, his ears began to make out the sounds around them. Three giants were surrounding them. Startled, Nick stepped backward, causing himself and his brother to stumble. The fall seemed to make his brother aware of the company around them. Nick felt the urge to hide, and he imagined his brother did as well. However, they were not of one mind on where to do so.

Two giant hands reached for them, calling out something that Nick could not understand. Though, the tone seemed calm and careful. The hands scooped him and his brother from the floor, cradling them against the giant's chest.

Nick suddenly realized that they were not giants at all. It was three, seemingly excited children. They were being held by a boy, and the warmth of his body made Nick drowsy. His brother's head was nearest the boy's head, so he settled for nestling next to his brother, whom had already fallen asleep. Soon, Nick too fell asleep.
