Tickling in space!
This choice: Kapteyn b  •  Go Back...
Chapter #3

Night World

    by: Carnivore Author IconMail Icon
You decide that Kapteyn b is the best place to go. "Erin, set course for Kapteyn b, best speed. If the only bad thing about this world is that its dark, it'll still make a good human colony. It's not like we can't set up lamps and all sorts of artificial light." You imagine what cities would be like on a world where it's always night: bright lights of all colors illuminating streets and buildings on the outskirts of pitch black wilderness. It sounds fun, and you don't mind the idea of exploring somewhere in the dark. It sounds like an adventure.

"Best speed?" Erin asks in a quizzical tone. "Alright, but that means…" all of a sudden you feel the hyperspace engine kicking in, spending you rocketing to your destination, and completely disorienting you. You blink dazedly, suddenly seeing a black orb filling your viewscreen, with a dim red sun smoldering in the distance. You hear Erin trying to talk to you. "…since I can trigger hyperspace just about whenever. At least, as long as they're recharged, which will be a while. Hey, you ok captain?"

You shake your head as you sit up straighter in your chair. "Uh… you could've warned me… nevermind." You realize you're going to have to be careful with how you word your commands to your AI, or it might get you into trouble. Hopefully Erin's penchant for literally obeying orders won't go so far as to do anything dangerous. "Are there any good spots to land?"

"Hmm, checking…" Erin says, pausing to scan the planet with various instruments. "There appears to be several acceptable landing zones at the edge of a forest, here in the temperate zone of the largest continent." Your screen highlights an area of the planet below. "Should I take us down?"

"Yes, Erin, land us in the best spot you can find. This time don't rush, be gentle about it." Visions of your ship slamming into the ground like a meteor briefly pass through your head. But you don't have to worry, as the ship lands softly on the ground. "Alright, I'm heading out, Erin. Maintain contact with me through the translator earpiece."

"Aye aye, captain! Have fun exploring!" Erin tells you, now speaking to you in your ear as you hop onto the surface. The description was accurate: the world is a dark place. You can see the sun hanging dimly at the horizon, your eyes slowly adjusting to the barely-there light. You see a forest in front of you, purple-black fronds of fat leaves hanging languidly from tall plant life. You decide not to waste any time, and start walking into the black forest. Despite your eyes getting used to the dark, you can barely see more than a few inches in front of you, and make your way slowly through the plants.
