Chapter #3

The Rad Ray

         "Are you ready for a new adventure?" Read the text from Nigel. Pete knew this could mean many things. Could be a new comic, a new figurine, or maybe another one of those gory Japanese movies Nigel loved. Either way it’s probably much more interesting than whatever Pete was doing that night and sent a quick text back, "Sure, what's up?"

         "Too much to explain over the phone, come to The Power Within as fast as you can." Nigel texted back, and Pete didn't need to hear anymore. Nigel only acted like this when he gets the best loot. And being close friends with the owner of the only comic book store owner in town meant knowing about it first. Nigel was always giving Pete and Jack special deals on his many products. On one similar occasion, Pete had scored a tiny replica of a Songbird statue from Bioshock Infinite for just fifty bucks. Pete didn't want to miss any possible deals, as he began to rush towards the comic book store.

         "Greetings friend!" Nigel welcomed Pete as he walked in The Power Within. No matter how many times Pete had seen it before, he was always blown away at Nigel's selections. From obscure manga, to expensive superhero comics from the fifties, Nigel had it all.

         "Wait a minute," Pete took a quick glance around the store, "Where's Jack? Did you forget to text him?"

         "Pft," Nigel scoffed, "That ingrate has lost his early notice privileges."

         "Nigel, is this about the translation thing?" Pete remembered that around a week ago, Nigel had come to Jack asking him to translate some unsubbed anime. Jack had initially agreed, but later backed out when Nigel revealed that he wanted him to translate a full series. Nigel considered this to be an act of betrayal but Pete assumed he would eventually get over it. Nigel had a tendency to be melodramatic when disappointed by something but he always turned out reasonable towards the end.

         "It's about a lot of things," Nigel shook his head, "Never mind that now, for I brought you down here for more important things. This isn't just another one of my amazing deals, this is something spectacular. Something to make life really worth living. No more hiding in the shadows reading comics or playing video games anymore. Now it's our time, Pete!"

         "What are you talking about, Nigel?" Pete raised an eyebrow at his nerdy friend.

         "I'm talking about this, Pete!" Nigel pulled out a strange machine from under his counter. At least it looked kind of like a machine, Pete not knowing what else to call it. It looked like a child's rendition of a science fiction device. It was just a simple metal box, with one purple button and a small satellite dish on the center of the top. In the middle of the dish, was a dark purple diamond.

         "Dude, did you make that?" Pete chuckled at the device. Pete had thought if Nigel was going to make something life changing, he would have at least put a little bit more effort into how it looked.

         "Of course I didn't make this," Nigel ignored Pete's laughter, "I don't have the know-how to create such an awesome contraption. I just got this sent in the mail, didn’t even order it. It came with a note that said I could use it best,"

         "What this awesome contraption called?" Pete asked, wondering if Nigel actually believed this thing could do anything.

         "It's called..." Nigel closed his eyes and whispered, "The Rad Ray,"

         "The Rad Ray?" Pete laughed, "Nigel, quit fucking around. did you really call me down here to mess around with this thing?"

         "Shut up!" Nigel grew serious, tired out Pete not taking this seriously, "I'm sick of everyone laughing at me! Girls laugh at me, customers laugh at me, Jack laughed at me, and now even you laugh at me. I'm so sick of being a joke!"

         "Hey, whoa," Pete held up his hands in defense, "Nigel, I'm sorry man. I thought you were kidding around with this thing. I don't think your a joke, dude"

         "Well," Nigel took a deep breath and stared at the Rad Ray, "Now will laugh at me when...
