"Starsong!" Came a cry across the crowded city square, "I challenge you to a duel of sorcery!"
The succinct challenge was almost enough to laugh. There she was, just on her way to pick up some tome or other that she had ordered, and some two-bit spellcaster with a chip on their shoulder just bluntly blurted out a declaration of war.
What did make her crack up a bit was the sight of her opponent. Shouldv'e guessed, she thought; the challenger was very clearly an elf, with the same tall stature, clear skin, and pointed ears of any elf, though the rest of her body was covered by a drab brown cloak. Likely a forest elf forced into some sort of modesty by the city guards- no elf of status would go walking around something so plain.
"Don't waste my time," Vanessa replied, turning away. Eager as she always was to put lesser conjurers in their place, she had other matters to attend to.
Of course, as a lick of flame sailed past her, singing the hem of her deep blue robes, Vanessa found herself reconsidering. Slowly, she turned back to the now smirking elf woman, magic already crackling to life at we fingertips.
"As I was saying," said the elf sorceress, "having heard your claims of possessing magic superior to any of my own kin, I, Auria Silverleaf, have come to-" the rest of her spiel exited her mouth with the rest of the air in her lungs as a bolt of force sent her clattering into a market stall behind her, kicking up a huge cloud of dust and debris.
"As I was saying," said Vanessa, as she dusted herself off, cringing as she ran her hands over the burned patch of cloth, " don't waste my..." Vanessa trailed off. Something was wrong. As she slipped back into her casting stance, the dust started to clear....
