Maybe he's a bard. A jack of all trades, master of very few, the bard is a great support to any team. Cunning, but falling behind both warriors and mages in terms of dealing damage, a bard doesn't do very well when alone in a face-to-face confrontation...
Or what about a cleric? Tapped into the Forces That Be, a cleric can be pure and good, or at least well meaning, and very powerful in a pinch. But, if the heavy, uncomfortable robes didn't give it away, intimate contact is not something they'd be used to.
